Description
THEM Angry Young Them, UK DECCA MONO 1st, PLAYS EX+
Them, The "Angry" Young Them!
1965 UK pressed Decca Records mono LP, LK 4700.
Earliest pressing with unboxed red and silver label, and 3A/4A matrix suffixes.
Vinyl has clearly been played a few times, and shows a number of spider trail marks at centre spindle areas. This is not excessive however, and the centre areas are not worn or whitened. Clearly a fairly carefully handled and played LP however. Vinyl surfaces still have a high gloss and display just a few superficial hairline scuff marks, some of which are slightly more visible. There are no deep scratches and visually grades at the very top end of VG.
Playback is extremely clean and grades a strong EX. Surfaces are underlyingly silent and there is no distortion or groove wear. Virtually free of crackle, and there are no clicks or ticks. Playback has been tested throughout and I noticed just a very, very few isolated single static ticks and spots of crackle. These all few and far between, at a very low volume and short duration, and mainly during bands between tracks. I have not deep cleaned the LP, and imagine that this is all due to dust build-up rather than any marks on the surfaces.
Note that the photo of the vinyl surfaces shows some white marks which are lint debris rather than marks on the surfaces.
Labels are clean and undefaced both sides.
Inner sleeve is original red bordered mono Decca and in excellent condition. No marks, tears or creasing, bar a modicum of the expected light circle around the outline of the vinyl. No seam splits. Some naturally occuring age browning spots from glue seepage.
Main sleeve is top end of VG. Very bright and clean still with just a little handling darkening and very light ringwear darkening to rear panel. No sticker, pen or other marks, bar a tiny sliver of a tan stain to bottom of rear, very minor. Front panel only is laminated, and this is unpeeled and with just a few minor half moons to surface near entry side and two or three tiny pinch line hairlines leading in from spine area.
Edge areas are all solid and without any wear. Tips just gently rubbed. Entry side still very firm. Some miniscule dinks, but no feathering. Top internal backflap has become separated, but without damage and merely needs reapplying. This LP, like the early Rolling Stones LPs on Decca, was issued with both visible and enclosed backflaps.
All in all a very nice example of this scarce classic early Beat LP featuring Van Morrison.

A Note On Grading:Note that audio grading is subjective and based on sensitivity of equipment used for playback. In this instance playback has been tested on a vintage Technics Quartz Direct Drive SL1700 MKII turntable with Shure cartridge, Technics SU-C 03 amp and Technics SB-F2 Linear Phase speakers.
Also note that I generally do not clean vinyl unless so noted. Most vinyl will show improved playback quality with your preferred cleaning method, but I leave this to the prospective buyer, as controversy still surrounds the ideal method of cleaning vinyl.
