Label/Format: Decca – early ‘boxed’ pressing (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Side one has a small stain as can be clearly seen on my scan. Side two has little to fault at all. Spindle marks are very few in number and mainly light but can be seen. In terms of this record, one that appears only lightly played.

Cat Number: LK 4751.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Original unboxed pressings in this sort of condition are rare, the price guides again are a joke. This band did not sell at all well and early copies are highly elusive and most that do surface are (like many ‘beat’ acts) trashed. The early boxed repressings (as per this one) are still scarce and quite elusive. As I always state for mono records like this, it’s often sound advice to purchase the early 70s pressings as they are far more likely to avoided over-use and much abuse on old mono record players that left their marks freely. Many have their grooves stripped away by blunt old stylus and sound terrible when played on more clinical high-quality equipment. This copy plays superbly and unless a first issue label format is important, this sounds just the same. Decca were not a label where quality diminished like so many others did. Still a heavy pressed record and the quality is assured, it’s simply not been ruined by the more unforgiving 60s era. My priority is always sound and this ticks all the boxes and fits the bill perfectly.

Brief Info: With clues on the title, this was the second Them album and it was to be the last proper album to feature Van Morrison. The band from Belfast, Northern Ireland that sounded not dissimilar to the early Rolling Stones. But whereas the Stones sold in vast numbers and were very popular, Them failed to sell at all well and both the early Decca albums are elusive and rare. Hence I have no qualms at all in offering this early pressed boxed format copy. Immensely hard to find in anything like decent playing conditions, this one plays superbly and includes an attractive cover too. A non-charting gem from the beat era, this proved more popular in the United States but went largely ignored in the UK. Now one of the most sort-after ‘beat’ bands by collectors, the two Them albums introduced the world to Van Morrison. ‘Again’ features a stunning version of Dylan’s ‘It’s All Over Now Baby Blue’ that many consider to be even better than the original. If this superb album eluded you all those years ago, this one to play and enjoy in the glorious mono format it was intended to be heard on.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: A fine EX, a single format, the front is Clarifoil laminated. This wraps around the closed edges and on to the back via the spine. This is a dedicated mono cover and was printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Lamination & Front: Highly prone to lifting and creasing, this superb looking front has withstood the test of time well. The laminate is very shiny and fresh and bar one tiny blister (bottom right corner), fully adhered. There is are some surface creases: a moderate one near the top left corner and a couple of modest half moons. The edges have some fine hairline types too but few avoid these. The card is quite thin and typical of these Decca covers from this period, hence some mildish record rim impression is near unavoidable. But honestly, little detracts from the stunning artwork of the band and the very young Van Morrison (then with his curly red locks). Any marks are few and very faint and only show under light and any friction rubs or dulling is light and minor, the shine and clarity wins hands-down on this very attractive and elusive cover.

Cover Back: The back is very nice indeed too: any grubbiness from which these types usually attractive over time is very little and faint. The odd tiny mark or two and any creases are few and faint. Any record impression also minor and the general lack of wear here is great news.

Top Edge: Practically as made.

Bottom Edge: One hairline crease and a tiny rub on right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with mimimal compression and only a small few ultra fine hairline creases. All text is practically perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: All are very neat with any tip rubbing modest, fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: The Decca polylined inner is included too in very fine condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A very nice EX, with just a very few, fine surface marks that have no sound at all. All evidence, including very clean and focused sound quality, suggests a copy only lightly played. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. No matter which pressing you find, Decca quality remained high and this is no exception. This will blow away most of the available early pressings simply because of its lack of exposure to vintage mono equipment. The raw production, like the early Stones, is not overly tolerant of heavy stylus abuse and many of these break-up and distort, not this one. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This almost ‘lost’ beat classic plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a typically raw mid-60s production, but with detailed sound. For reference, this sounds very similar to the first two Rolling Stones albums with quite a low-fi sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no noteworthy pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing (but typical of Decca). Few copies will outperform this early repressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and devoid of mono noise that blights so many, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and avoided any harsh treatment on older equipment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, indeed this is my first ever on vinyl for this title. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
