I BOUGHT this album when it first came out having seen the band live on a couple of occasions (supporting Bachman Turner Overdrive no less!) and was eager to get in on the action from the ground up. 'Fighting' didn't disappoint, as it found Lizzy finally defining a style - make that a hard rock style - all of their own with dueling twin lead guitars and heavy, heavy riffs. The guitar axis of Roberston and Gorham had finally found their niche, locking into a double trouble wall of noise whilst Phil Lynott attempted to keep the two apart with his trademark lilt and super slinky legs.
There can be no more defiant an opening track on any album than 'Rosalie' a Bob Seger cover that fits Lizzy like a glove, a real tough guy rocker that is now thought of as much a Lizzy anthem than a Seger original. Look to 'For Those Who Love To Live', 'Wild One', 'King's Vengeance' and 'Freedom Song' for evidence of Lizzy finally conquering and co-opting the twin lead guitar approach touched on by Wishbone Ash but only heavier, dirtier, meaner and far more pronounced than anything accomplished previously. Gorham and Robertson worked together like brothers in arms - occasionally lovingly but more often like two siblings battling it ought over a wrestling match of who's better and who's best.
It's all here from the pounding, street fighting cock rock of 'Suicide' to the lilting love loss of 'Spirit Slips Away' and all points inbetween. Man of the match - Phil Lynott, hands down. The leader of the gang, a feller not to be messed with unless you want a motorcycle chain wrapped around yer face. Hard, heavy and one hell of a talent.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
