Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. About average Decca for it’s era, which is heavier than most.

Rarity: Scarce: and try finding one much better. The cover prone to all forms of wear, this has hardly any and looks very impressive. The record has a couple of superficial surface marks but no sound and plays very well indeed. The often missing insert sheet also included in practically Mint condition.

Brief Info: Superb and somewhat elusive third album by hard rockers Thin Lizzy, still not a household name at this time, this album failed to even chart. But the breakthrough came with the hit single ‘Whisky in the Jar’ and then the hits and fame came fast. This was the last album to feature guitarist Eric Bell, it features one of their best and ever popular tracks in ‘The Rocker’. Beautifully packaged but fragile, the owner of this lovely copy protected the fragile cover from new and that will immediately apparent to any winning bidder. So many are seen simply tatty and torn. The late, great Phil Lynott himself would have approved of this one?

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. Includes lyrics insert sheet and Decca lined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Little short of factory fresh and looking very impressive. The richness and vibrancy of the colour that lacks any wear of any note is simply has to be seen to be believed. Blemishes? well the odd light surface mark and a small few very fine and faint edge hairlines. A small rim impression on the bottom edge – all tiny reminders of the age of this colourful Thin Lizzy cover, but few will even get close to beating this.

Cover Back: Equally impressive and even more revealing than the front being predominately black. One tiny rub trace and again, a tiny few edge hairlines, but little else. The lack of penetrating ring wear to either side is a massive bonus.

Top Edge: Practically unworn and straight.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of Mint as made: solid, straight with barely any hint of compression. All text is perfect and unworn with no rubbing to the black surface.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint, hardly anything in fact. The odd very gentle hint of a crease, this being very critical again. All retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very memorable cover in all respects, made more so because so many are seen very badly worn. Those rich colours faded and rubbed away with ugly heavy ring wear seen on both sides. To find one that has so little to fault is a real achievement. I tip-my-hat to the owner because this is not an easy one at all, even with care, this seems to just attract wear. A lovely all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with secure lining and edges, both window circles are ultra crisp and the lining clear. This retains freshness and strong colour, any fading modestly light and barely any creasing at all. No repairs, none needed, this looks very nice indeed.

The Lyric Insert: Practically MINT. Clean, fresh, not creasing with barely a blemish of note to mention. Printed in England by Senol, lyrics one side, graphic on the other.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A couple of three fairly light more visible surface marks with no sound, another others are very fine and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. So visually, not blemish-free, but the sound is very impressive and, as per usual, the Decca pressing is almost exemplary. Visually a clean, pleasing record that should please many collectors, but not the perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic early Thin Lizzy album plays even above it’s solid visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds or pops, just the odd tiny light sporadic tick or two noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, as you would expect from the UK’s premier record label in terms of quality. Few copies will match or outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly with perhaps the odd mishap, but the audio quality has virtually remained unscathed. Clearly it has been well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive copy. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. The cover and insert especially could prove significant upgrades for many.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
