THIP TAYLOR at the piano, Miss You LP, Ember Records ELP 300, 1958.

An outrageous cheesecake cover in gorgeous condition graces this collection of light piano trio tracks, probably closer in style to easy listening than smooth jazz. The vinyl is in VG/VG- condition, very listenable, but with surface noise always present. There are a couple significant scratches and scuffs, and these do cause one small groove jump on each side of the record. I would add that I listened to the whole record to check it, and this guy takes the idea of "tickling the ivories" literally, it would seem. Why play one note when you can squeeze in 8 or 16? This is ridiculously florid playing that grows really tiresome after only a couple of tracks. I had to listen to it - you don't. 

The sleeve offers a nice extreme take on the common 50's cover image: a woman sitting on cushions on the floor, listening to a record player (frequently a console, as here) and swooning with emotion, simultaneously attracting and horrifying every male record collector with her wanton treatment of the unsleeved LPs lying all around her. Perhaps this one can be forgiven for vinyl abuse because they've tied her top so tight and high that she can't breathe and really is swooning. In any case it's a fun image and this copy presents it in just about the best condition imaginable. The cover is perfect except for two small corner dings and one nick along the opening, and a small amount of excess glue leakage along the spine. The laminated front image is startlingly glossy for a 50-year-old record. It really looks brand new.

Some research into Ember Records' discography reveals that the first release of this record was on the earliest Ember label. red with black lettering. The labels on this copy are the second type Ember used, the much cooler-looking multicolored "burning log" labels, which means this copy may date from a year or two later than the original release. Details on the exact timing of these labels are difficult to come by. Ember later switched to a third label, black with red flames, apparently in 1960.
