Record Collector's Standard Condition Gradings and the way I use them:
When advertising records for sale I seldom offer any vinyl below Very Good grade.
Seven condition grades are defined by the Record Collector magazine and in the Rare Record Price Guide.
M(Mint) The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as a lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. To me Mint is the Gold Standard and almost no used records and few extra items meet this criterion. In recognition of this many sellers use the term "Near Mint" (NM). I use this term, but sparingly.
EX(Excellent) The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VG(Very Good) The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects is acceptable.
G(Good) The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
Three further grades (Fair, Poor and Bad) are defined but I almost never use them. I aim for a Minimum condition of VG which I try to exceed wherever possible.
Gradings with Plus or Minus signs:
Used records often fall between gradings, for example when almost the entire surface of a record is EXCELLENT, but a mark such as a scuff which does not affect sound quality or when light scratches in just one or two areas of the playing surfaces are present. Common practice is often to qualify a grading by use of a plus or minus sign, such as VG+ or EX-. I use these symbols to try to convey a clear sense of the condition to expect.
