THREE DOG NIGHT - CYAN September 1973 Test Pressing LP




This album, while not their most successful, is one of Three Dog Night's most interesting. Cut during a period when they were still very hot but were almost on the downside of their career, this album has a very strong gospel feeling to it. This is most evident on the hit single "Shambala," one of the group's finest later period records. It's a masterful record that shows the factors that made the group successful -- the counterpoint vocals of Wells, Negron, and Hutton surrounded by a very heavy hard rock backing. Guitarist Mike Allsup contributes a few good originals, too. The closing track, "Into My Life," continues the gospel feeling of the record and ends it on a high note. It's nice to know that with all of the debauchery and drugs, Three Dog Night still had their spiritual priorities in some order.

This is a test pressing sent out to KRUX in Phoenix in advance of the release. ** NOTE** at the time of this test pressing the A and B side of the album were reversed. While the printed sheet has the LP in the right configuration, the LP is marked otherwise. And it is marked that way in the matrix numbers as well.

What is a test pressing?

In the record making process, there is a step where the plates are lined up to press the records and a few are stamped out, right at the beginning of the run. These are used for a variety of purposes, m ost of which have to do with checking alignment of the plates, looking to see that the grooves don't have any distortion, and that the correct "a" and "b" versions of the songs are on the record. They're also sent out to the artist themselves as an advance of an upcoming release. Insiders at the record company itself may get some too, just to keep up on the latest from their label. And finally, a few might be mailed out to influential DJs to give them a long-range advance on a hot new artist or record. All in all, there are usually no more than a few dozen stamped out. They all have plain, generic labels with the name of the pressing plant on them with the artist information usually written on by hand. They truly are the first pressings of a given record and catch the pressing plates at their best and most crisp
