THURSTON MOORE
Rebellion of Joy

From september 19th to november 18th
Opening reception monday 19th from 6pm to 9pm
Red Bull Space Paris, 12 rue du Mail, 75002 Paris, France

On the occasion of Red Bull Music Academy Festival Paris, we gave Thurston Moore carte blanche to curate an exhibition of drawings, collages, archives and other paraphernalia. The legendary American musician and writer will present works inspired by the underground luminaries that have crossed his path over the last 40 years, from Mayhem to Yoko Ono, Raymond Pettibon and Henri Chopin, all the way to Cameron Jamie, Savage Pencil and many others. The Sonic Youth co-founder recorded the show’s exclusive soundtrack as part of a week-long residence at Red Bull Studios Paris, of which a free, limited-edition vinyl pressing will to be handed out during at the exhibition (while supplies last.)

Deploying collage techniques mashed up through a process described by the artist as “a kind of punk photoshop,” these new works re-purposed press clippings, press photos, and correspondence culled from Moore`s own archive. The results are a compelling series of personal, urban daydreams, cast from a fan’s perspective. Familiar downtown faces include Iggy Pop, Necrobutcher, the Ramones, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg, and Kathy Acker. Screaming fields of disjointed imagery and deeply saturated colors collide and overlap, yielding tales from the pulp crypt of a not-to-be-forgotten New York underground. Only rarely do musicians translate their sonic talents so fittingly and so refreshingly into the domain of visual art.

« I am basing the work on exercises I did as a teenager cutting out pictures from Rock Scene, Creem and Circus magazines and collaging them as an obsessive diarist. Doing this work now utilizing some kind of punk Photoshop method where I can actually drop myself and other referentials into the pieces has allowed me (starting) at age 47 to create an ongoing open-heart bio-historagophy. »

Thurston spent a couple of weekends at Red Bull Studios Paris producing and recording the soundtrack for ‘Offerings.’ With the support of the poet Radieux Radio and artist Cameron Jamie he has crafted a purely ‘black noise sound’ to accompany the project.  “I wanted a sonic landscape that really extrapolated the exhibition experience. These metal moments at Red Bull Studios Paris were an awesome experience because we worked the weekends when no one was in the office and were able to be LOUD with no one running, screaming out of the building.” The soundtrack will exclusively be available at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, on limited edition vinyl only.
