Stepping back from the swooping avant-garde touches of Starsailor for a fairly greasy, funky, honky tonk set of songs, the opening lines of Greetings from L.A. set the tone: "I went down to the meat rack tavern/And I found myself a big ol' healthy girl." Sassy backing vocalists, honking sax, and more add to the atmosphere, while Tim Buckley himself blends his vocal acrobatics with touches not unfamiliar to fans of Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison. The studio band backing him up might not be the equal to, say, War, but in their own way they do the business; extra touches like the string arrangement on "Sweet Surrender" help all the more. The argument that this was all somehow a compromise or sellout doesn't seem to entirely wash. While no doubt there were commercial pressures at play, given Buckley's constant change from album to album it seems like he simply found something else to try, which he did with gusto. "Get On Top," one of his best numbers, certainly doesn't sound like something aimed for the charts. The music may have a solid groove to it (Kevin Kelly's organ is worth a mention), but Buckley's frank lyrics and improv scatting both show it as him following his own muse.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY NED RAGGETT, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

The hormone-crazed, sex-drenched, dope-dazed, blue-eyed FUNK at its most deranged, this, the Tim Buckley's last truly GREAT album funks and rocks and sways like crazy, and features some of the most honest and revealing songs of his career, and that’s surely telling a lot. The album includes what we feel is the very finest Buckley vocal performance on record, "Sweet Surrender",  the almost 7-minute long, gut-wrenching, emotional roller-coaster, which actually charted in Germany and parts of Europe in 1973. A critical piece in any Tim Buckley discography.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·        CONDITION:

·        RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)           WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)           The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)            White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(d)           The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(e)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·        COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, UNIPAK COVER WITH A DETACHABLE POSTCARD)

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-          The cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-          Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-          The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-          Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant); Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-          Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-          The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side  (nothing significant)

-          Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-          Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
