Oh my. What a stable Blue Note had all those years ago. So many classics, so many players drifting in and out of each other's music. Turretine working for Grant Green who worked for Turrentine. Art Farmer and young Jackie McLean doubling up for classics such as Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin', and then Jackie showing up with Blue Mitchell for another classic, this one--Tina Brooks' Back to the Tracks.

What happened? Why did Blue Note hold on to this for decades?
Tina could write--his tunes swing with an overlay of blues, even an echo of gospel. McLean is loose on alto, although not as scorching as he gets in later years. Blue Mitchell goes strong on the trumpet, and Tina is in nobody's shadow as he works the tenor sax. Paul Chambers and Art Taylor lay down an insistent melody line, and everone else takes off from there, but noone goes so far away that the rhythm breaks down or the hooks fall apart.

Three of the five pieces belong to Tina, and his melodies swing in that hard bop way. And those eight to ten minute tracks let everyone stretch out, work together, branch out on their own.

Tragedy in Tina's life? Sure, but that's old news for jazz artists in the forties and fifties. Musically, Tina Brooks deserved a better fate. This is a classic, right up there with Morgan's "Sidewinder," Clark's "Cool Struttin,'" and Dexter Gordon's "Go."

As some audiophiles are aware, Classic Record LP sounded on 180 grams of vinyl (or less weight), much better than the later 200 gram versions of the same title. Apparently this has to do with the vinyl presses used to make the LPs when they were converted to 200 grams of vinyl. These machines have never been designed to treat the extra thick, 200 gram plates of vinyl. And just to beat from 180 to 200, it was very problematic. The vinyl was loud. There were urgent shortcomings. All in all, an inferior product compared to the somewhat less heavy but much better sounding 180 grams of vinyl. Classic Records came with all sorts of variants for their 200 gram squeezes - remember all this? If you've lived this period, you're probably wondering why there were so many versions of the same music made by the same company in some other vinyl brew! It was simple that the 200 gram versions were subject to the previous pressures on 180 grams of vinyl. This is the reason why the 180 gram versions not only cost much more to acquire now, but they did indeed much better. As a collector, you will probably try to see a few versions yourself, if Audiophiles would simply imagine what they were listening to - this is your chance to acquire such a title. ..................Aufnahmen 1. September und 20. Oktober 1960..................... So etwas gibt es tatsächlich noch: im Jahre 2006 erscheint eine Platte erstmals in Mono, deren Aufnahmen 1960 stattfanden! Den Angaben zufolge erschien die Platte zuerst in Japan und erst danach in den USA (immer als Stereoversion), vor einiger Zeit war die Aufnahme dann Bestandteil einer genialen Mosaic-Box. Nun also dürfen sich alle Liebhaber des typischen Blue Note Sound auf diese tolle Hardbop-Scheibe freuen, besonders, weil Tina Brooks eine hochkarätige Band zur Verfügung hatte. Dass Brooks dabei trotzdem noch im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens steht, überrascht dann doch ein wenig. Denn sein melodischer, eleganter Stil wirkt sonst eigentlich eher zurückhaltend, hier aber rückt er besonders bei den ruhigeren Stücken (drei Eigenkompositionen, zwei Standards) in den Fokus. Reizvoll sind natürlich auch die Tracks, bei denen alle drei Bläser zusammenspielen, angetrieben von der grandiosen Rhythmus-Section. ....................

Wie einige Audiophile sich bewusst sind, klang Classic Record LP Titel, die auf 180 Gramm Vinyl (oder weniger Gewicht) ausgegeben wurden, viel besser als die späteren 200 Gramm Versionen des gleichen Titels. Anscheinend hat dies mit den Vinylpressen zu tun, die verwendet wurden, um die LPs zu machen, wenn sie auf 200 Gramm Vinyl umgestellt wurden. Diese Maschinen wurden nie eingerichtet, um die extra dicken, 200 Gramm Platten von Vinyl zu behandeln. Und um einfach von 180 auf 200 zu schlagen, war es sehr problematisch. Das Vinyl war laut. Es gab dringende Mängel. Alles in allem ein minderwertiges Produkt im Vergleich zu dem etwas weniger schweren, aber viel besser klingenden 180 Gramm Vinyl. Classic Records kam mit allen Arten von Varianten für ihre 200 Gramm Pressungen - erinnern Sie sich das alles? Wenn du diese Periode gelebt hast, fragst du dich wahrscheinlich, warum es so viele Versionen derselben Musik gab, die von der gleichen Firma in etwas anderen Vinyl-Gebräu gemacht wurde! Es war einfach, dass die 200 Gramm-Versionen den früheren Pressungen auf 180 Gramm Vinyl unterlegen waren. Dies ist der Grund, warum die 180 Gramm-Versionen nicht nur viel mehr kosten, um jetzt zu erwerben, aber sie taten in der Tat viel besser.
