TIR NA NOG Same/Debut 1971 Chrysalis 1U/1U G1/G1 FIRST PRESS Island Script FOLK
Tir Na Nog, Self-Titled Debut Album.
Original 1971 UK pressed Chrysalis Records stereo LP housed in gatefold sleeve, ILPS 9153.
The very earliest pressing with 1U/1U matrix suffixes and 1G/1G mothers/stampers. Labels feature white "Island Records, Basing Street" script at 12 o'clock, another feature of the earliest pressing.
The disc is housed in the earliest issue "E.J.Day" gatefold sleeve, which is heavy duty and laminated to front and rear. The inner sleeve is poly-lined light blue paper with pink Island logo to bottom of both sides, along with "Island Records, Basing Street" script, also in pink.
A generally very well preserved example. At casual glance vinyl is in strong EX condition. The playing surfaces are still very glossy and there are no immediately noticeable marks. The labels are similarly clean and bright, with just a very few light spider trail marks visible at centre spindle areas.
Closer inspection of the playing surfaces with the aid of a magnifying glass reveals a few light hairline scuff marks and just one very thin surface only mark just pronounced enough to be designated a scratch rather than scuff. This is non-sounding however.
Playback is on the whole extremely clean and bright. There is some occasional very mild and short-lived crackle, but this is extremely limited and always at a very low volume. The vast majority of the LP plays with quiet surfaces, including at run-ins and band separators. There is just one instance of approx. three very low level soft consecutive ticks towards the end of the LP. Note, however, that I have given this LP just the one play test after acquiring it. I gave both sides just a cursory dust with a lint-free record cleaning cloth to remove obvious dust debris, and there is probably room for further cleaning and sound improvement. As it stands the playback grades just a fraction short of EX, and is easily and conservatively a strong VG plus.
Inner sleeve is close to EX. Clean and unmarked, although a few peripheral minor spots of light browning from the adhesive used to keep the poly inner in place. No seam splits, and just a modicum of natural creasing from the outline of the disc.
External gatefold sleeve EX. Still exhibits a satisfying creak when opening, which shows a lightly handled and little used sleeve. Still very crisp and glossy with just a very few small and minor instances of shelving hairlining. No stickers, pen marks or stains bar one or two miniscule dots of darkening. Just a fraction of storage contact rubbing to top of rear panel. Matt interior is similarly clean with just one tiny dot of a scrape mark. Edges are in great shape and free of any wear or seam splits. The spine is in great shape with a natural single hairline crease running through centre. Just a tad of separation of laminate at head of spine. Tips are all firm and square and without rubbing, whitening or rounding. Entry side is still very firm and crisp.
All in all, a very pleasing example of this early UK Folk LP.
