Description

TOLLY (BURKAN) -- Cosmic Melodrama -- ex. rare, original 1979 U.S. album.  Truly out-there and deranged Private Press / DIY / Acid Archives-type album from Tolly Burkan, better known as the "father of the global firewalking movement," which should tell you all you need to know about the music contained inside.  Even by Outsider Music standards this is a strange one and ranges from plaintive, Donovan / Peter Paul & Mary-like folk numbers ("Whatever You Do Comes Back to You," "In the Forest") delivered in his bizarre, off-key voice -- to demented sung / spoken songs like "Cosmic Melodrama," "Little Zen Koan," the eerie "Tightrope Walkers" and the narrative "Everyone I See Is Me" (possibly the album's highlight) in which Tolly wakes up from a surreal dream to realize that, yes, everyone he sees is him ... And oh yeah, he goes Folk Psych on Side Two with the 7-1/2 minute "The Burning Candle" with Indian tabla backing and "Om for World Peace" to wrap it up.  Overall vibe is something like a spaced-out, Zen-drenched grown-up pretending he's a 10-year old boy and it's quite fascinating in its odder-than-odd, Peter Grudzien/The Unicorn way.  A very difficult record to come by -- I've never seen another copy.  Cover:  VG-, ring wear and wear at corners, clear tape on 3/4 of bottom seam and at top right corner, price sticker upper right front.  Record:  VG++/VG+++, on World Records private label, U.S. press.
