Southern Accents is Tom Petty's most ambitious and inventive album of his career. Petty decided to change up the formula, and it works. This album stands out amongst the awful 80s noise of 1985 as not only one of the best records of the year, but one of the best records of the decade.
First of all, no one can deny this album's immediate pop-rock catchiness. Each song boast tremendously memorable hooks and singalong choruses. The funky "It's Nothin' To Me" and "Make It Better" are both terrific dance numbers. I don't understand the dislike for these songs. Sure they're lyrically trivial, but so were the majority of 80s pop tunes. These songs succeed where they need to succeed, they're immediately groovy.
The other album tracks are even better. "Spike" is hilarious. It's absolutely nothing like the Heartbreaker's other catalogue; and "Dogs On The Run" is a forgotten classic! It's a memorable and heartfelt rocker that blows away anything off of Long After Dark. The song really hits as a motivational southern-tinged road song. It's basically Rebels Pt. 2, and that's not a bad thing.
The album's only weak point is the penultimate track: "Mary's New Car" comes across as a throwaway, it's still catchy filler, but filler nonetheless.
"The Best Of Everything" is a good ballad, similar to "Louisiana Rain" in style, but the production is a little messy. I still really enjoy this heartfelt track, especially Mike's guitar solo. His playing throughout the album, is some of his very best. It somehow manages to act like another vessel for the album's concept, it too, has a southern accent.
Southern Accent's central concept may have been a bit scattershot. But the opening track "Rebels" embodies it perfectly. "Rebels" one of Tom Petty's best songs, ranking among the likes of "American Girl" and "Refugee". It's possibly my favourite song in his catalogue. The title track is an ode to the band's hometown, containing some of the best lyrics on the album. "the young'uns call it country, the Yankees call it dumb".
Then there's the electric sitar-infused "Don't Come Around Here No More". The song is one of the most unconventional in TP's catalogue, but it works. One of the biggest hits of the year, this is one of those tracks that defines Tom Petty, and rightly so. I especially love when the song speeds up into a full-fledged rocker in its last minute. Probably the best moment of the album.
Ultimately, Southern Accents is one of Tom Petty's best albums. It contains some of his most memorable and innovative songs and lyrics. My main complaint with the album is the typical mid-80s production; the songs don't hit as hard as they could, which is a bit of a shame, since Southern Accents contains some of Petty's best songs. Regardless, I don't understand why it gets lambasted by the critics.
