Description
Available here is a 12" LP record by Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones. Exceedingly rare in this form, I was able to identify it from the Discogs website, which confirms that it is a 1983 US Asylum promo. It has a printed catalogue number of 60211.
Between 1973 and 1980, Tom Waits had released seven albums on Asylum but it is said that when presented with Swordfishtrombones, the record company considered it too weird and they decided not to release it. However, before Island picked it up, it had clearly made considerable progress towards an Asylum release.
This promo has official Asylum labels but the second side has a bold black felt tip mark "Radio Contact" suggesting that it had gone out for possible airplay? The record also features alternate cover artwork by Tom Waits himself or possibly by Kathleen Brennan, his wife. A different cover adorns the Island release but this one is the same as that used for an abandoned Australian and New Zealand Asylum edition as well as German promos. There is also an inner lyric/photo sleeve.

Vinyl Condition - Very Good - The record is quite bright and clean and although there are a few light surface marks, there are no worrying scratches. Having listened to both sides, I can confirm that there is no jumping or sticking but expect occasional clicks. Background crackle/noise is present at times but not excessive. It’s mainly heard during quieter moments but generally low level.
Sleeve Condition - Very Good - The outer cover has a little edge/corner wear, stress creasing and partial disc impression marks but no real damage. Inner lyric/photo sleeve for the record is slit along one side. There’s also a see-through plastic cover for protection.
