Description
Per Wikipedia, Thomas Alan Waits is an American musician, composer, songwriter, and actor. His lyrics often focus on society's underworld and are delivered in his trademark deep, gravelly voice. He began in the folk scene during the 1970s, but his music since the 1980s has reflected the influence of such diverse genres as rock, delta blues, jazz, blues, opera, vaudeville, cabaret, funk and experimental techniques verging on industrial music. Waits has influenced many artists and gained an international cult following. His songs have been covered by Bruce Springsteen, Tori Amos, Rod Stewart and the Eagles and he has written songs for Johnny Cash and Norah Jones, among others. In 2011, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The album up for sale, Swordfishtrombones is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter Tom Waits, released in September, 1983 on Island Records. It was the first album that Waits self-produced. Stylistically different from his previous albums, Swordfishtrombones moves away from conventional piano-based songwriting towards unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract and experimental rock approach. It is often considered the first in a loose trilogy that includes Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild Years. Per The Guardian, "These are records of startling originality and playfulness, of cacophonous discord and sudden heartbreaking melody, in which it seemed the artist was trying to incorporate the whole history of American song into his loose-limbed poetic storytelling." This particular recording is a 1983 release on the Island record label. It was distributed by Atlantic Records, masterd by Kendum Recorders and pressed by the Allied Record Company and is a 1st edition/pressing. The album consists of 15 tracks with a run time of 41+ minutes. The cover is in VG+ condition with no split seams and only mild wear along the edges. There is mild disc ring wear on the front cover. The back cover contains track listings and some production information. There are no markings and the artwork and graphics show no sign of discoloration. The paper inner sleeve is original but has split seams that have been taped over. The covers contain track listing along with lyrics on both sides. I have enclosed the recording in an anti-static, poly vinyl sleeve for added protection from dusc accumalation. The recording has been cleaned and tested using Audacity. All tracks are free from "skips". There is mild background noise that consists of occasional mild "clicks" that do not interfere with the music. The sound is strong, clean and crisp. The disc surfaces show mild superficial wear, but there are no obvious defects such as scratches or scuffs to impact on the music. By Goldmine standards for grading recordings, this record would rate VG.
