Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight pressed by Decca.

Rarity: Rare: this would have sold in very small numbers and on the London ‘American Series’ label. Also hardly played and offering immaculate mono sound, a beautiful archive piece dating back to the mid-60s, this will prove near impossible to find much better.

Brief Info: Allsup is a famed rockabilly guitarist. In 1958 he met Buddy Holly and started playing lead guitar with The Crickets. He is also known for the famous toss-of-the-coin with Ritchie Valens for a seat on the ill-fated plane ride that killed Holly, Valens and the Big Bopper – he is now 82 years old. On this album Allsup plays the wonderful work of Holly with his very distinctive guitar sound. What a pleasure to hear his take on these classic songs via a pristine sound original mono record. Both disc and cover are fantastic and this will rarely be found like this as an elusive UK pressing. Only by a simple twist (or spin) of fate, was this album able to be made at all and any rockabilly fan will cherish the memory of Holly’s music from his former guitarist. Tommy still lives in Nashville where he remains active in the music business. He has played guitar or bass on around six thousand five hundred recording sessions which has left him contented, he once said: “I never really wanted to be a big star, I figured I’d leave that to someone else”. This is a very special man and album indeed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and possibly undergraded at that. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This ends on the back via top and bottom external flipbacks and on the flat spine edge. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Lamination & Front: This is in exceptional condition: cover-protected from new and made with very thin card. Few will ever be found like this for sure. It retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity with barely any dulling or creasing as all. A smallish lift on the spine edge that shows little, a natural trait of Clarifoil in particular that shrinks which causes lifts or bowing of the card, that has been totally avoided. Gentle rim impression only and this cover front is gorgeous and age-defying.

Cover Back: Simply amazing, this is practically as made. Clean, fresh with barely any hint of discolouration or wear. The odd gentle surface laminate crease on the two near supreme flipbacks and even the spine laminate end is clean and grime-free. A very delicate cover and beautifully preserved in archive quality condition.

Top Edge: A couple of small laminate chips but little else to fault.

Bottom Edge: Immaculate as new, all edges on this cover are very straight and unbowed, that very unusual indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Equally, the spine is in beautiful condition. Solid, straight with minimal compression. The ends are nipped in manufacture and retain excellent shape. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All retain better than excellent to near mint shape with barely any wear, creasing and no dinks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this very fragile mid-60’s cover, one that will prove near impossible to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors and is a very nostalgic piece of classic rockabilly.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a vintage Decca-style polylined inner only marked down for a corner crease and a little crinkle on the other. Clean, fresh with the lining very clear as seen through two pristine window circles. No edge splits or repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): or as close as a 48-year-old mono record will probably get. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks minscule. We all know what mono records of this era were potentially exposed to and played on and finding them in little short of as made condition is beyond difficult. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality and quite outstanding record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Mono records from this vintage were hardly really designed to be played on a highly revealing stereo system, but when found this clean, they sound magnificent. That beautiful guitar style and sound has an in-the-room quality and has tremendous sonic delivery of the music. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and both record and cover merit my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
