TOMMY McCLENNAN
CROSS CUT SAW BLUES




McClennan was an influential blues musician born in Durant, Mississippi, and sang blues in a rough, energetic style. He made a series of recordings for Bluebird Records from 1939 through 1942 and a lot of them are on this collection. He regularly played with his friend Robert Petway.

McClennan's singles in this period included "Bottle It Up and Go", "New Highway No. 51", "Shake 'Em on Down", and "Whiskey Head Woman".Several of his songs have been covered by other musicians, including "Cross Cut Saw Blues" (covered by Albert King) and "My Baby's Gone" (Moon Mullican). Bob Dylan covered Tommy McClennan's "Highway 51" on his self-titled debut album in 1962.

This album came out in 1968 on the little Roots Records label and is Roots RL-305. It’s an original pressing and is probably unplayed.

This vintage blues album is from the personal collection of blues researcher / writer Mack McCormick and is being sold to raise some needed funds for the Texas Musicians Museum. We appreciate any help in our mission to preserve music.
