Label Conditions: Both in little short of pristine condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with just a tiny fine spindle trace each side – they hardly get better than this. This a superb example with sound to match.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. A typical weight for this late Plum Atlantic record. And crucially, a fantastic clean pressing that is crucial for this very delicate album.

Rarity: Scarce, hardly a major seller. This again was issued right near the very end of the red and maroon format line. Most are seen as the Kinney repressing with the orange and green labels and new calogue number of K40251. This original also includes the prized ‘Head Hunters’ inner sleeve which most collectors will know is collectable in it’s own right.

Musicians: Robert Margouleff & Malcolm Cecil play an expanded Series III Moog Synthesiser.

Brief Info: TONTO is an acronym for ‘The Original New Timbral Orchestra’: the world’s first (and still the largest) multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesiser, designed and constructed by Malcolm Cecil. It produced a unique sound, rich and warm with a capability of producing a very deep tone and cannot be recreated on modern and far smaller synths. This was a massive unit that resembled something more often seen at a space laboratory. TONTO resided at Mutato Muzika studios in the mid-1990s, the headquarters of Mark Mothersbaugh and Devo. This was the first Tonto’s Expanding Head Band album and caused attention with it’s groundbreaking sounds and still sounds fresh even today. This is a predominately instrumental album with only a few ‘voice-like’ sounds – this is not Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream, this is a little different and a record to expand the mind. A genuinely scarce Plum copy and in truly stunning, hardly played condition with a cover wear-prone cover with little. Get this on to a worthy system and here those amazing sounds moving the airways again soon. I feel sure this title has only had a very limited issue on CD and to be honest I have never even seen one, whether it’s still available or not on that format, I am not sure. What is certain, this copy includes the scarce Head Hunters inner sleeve in superb condition – but the one original owner did put an identification sticker on it, it may remove, but I am not going to risk it. The record pressed to near classical standard with very little unwanted. With passages of very quiet sound, this is essential and this quite possibly the very best I have heard to date.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces.This being the Atlantic Plum original with the correct 2400 150 SUPER number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the ‘Head Hunters’ inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Little to fault on this impressive clean front. Any hint or rubbing or marks, very few, fine and faint, the lack of creasing another major plus. Unfaded with no sticker marks, this will prove hard to find better.

Cover Back: A little evidence of rim rubbing near the top and bottom, mostly seen under light, but barely any ink erosion. A couple of mild thumb-type semi-creases near the left edge show little with normal full-on viewing. Then, largely as per the front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, this has little to fault, lovely artwork on the right face as well.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush, any rub traces few, fine and light.

Bottom Edges: Similar with patch fine light rubbing here-and-there.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal wear, any thickening or burring little and light. Record entered on the back edge, neither trimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Minimal real wear, just very gently light faded. Solid, straight with very little compression. Folded square with the edges being flush and parallel. All the text matter fully present and unworn, even the folds retain nigh-on full ink cover with barely any scuffs.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light with very fine to excellent shape retained. No bashes, possibly a very gentle dink to the top left.

Cover Summary: A strong and attractive all-round example of this original, very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This more often seen ugly penetrating ring worn and rubbing which this one has largely avoided, I consider this unforgiving cover to be near exceptional.

The ‘Head Hunters’ – Get a Head Inner: EXCELLENT(++): that in terms of wear (or lack of). But as seen, the one owner put a large yellow round sticker on one side and on this sticker he wrote album’s details as seen. My grading makes no allowance for this, it has nothing to do with wear or condition per se. A famous inner sleeve that was NOT included with all copies of this record, far from it in fact. This is lined and with robust flipback construction, all very neat, one or two small crinkles near the top of the ‘sticker’ side. No tears and no hard creasing. With a deep, dark matt finish, this can fade and age badly too, yes it can even suffer ring wear and often does. This has escaped it simply because the record was not stored inside this one for any great length of time (there lies the difference). Even the adhesive on the edges has not browned much at all, that is highly unusual. Any evidence of this is confined to the inside. So hardly aged and the edges unsplit with no repairs. A classic scarce inner with all the artists you would imagine included in the collage from the related label. A select few are: Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention; Rory Gallagher; CSN; Ritchie Havens; The Who, Melanie et al. A class item, flipback folded, getting rare in-itself and collectable.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and worthy of the extra (+) I think. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with superb shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence, and then with due care with any surface trace marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Mostly wispy blemishes finer than hairlines, viewed in average room light, both sides look little short of immaculate with no penetrating stylus marks at all. Visually a lovely fresh record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality first issue album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. This has some very quiet passages, so a quality pressing and well-looked after copy is essential – I do not think any copy of this will ever play ‘silent’, but this has minimal contact sounds. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
