Label/Format: Atlantic – original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format with matt surfaces that have a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate, very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only one or two fine and faint spindle traces. The only ‘blemish’, if indeed you can call it that, is the very first owner put his first initial ‘P’, very finely and neatly on his records. This seen to the left of the song titles on side one, and below ‘ATLANTIC’ at the 9 o’clock positioin on side two. This entire album is fantstic, the owner very particular indeed, cover-protected and stored with precision and care. The record in archive condition with sound to match, also that very wear-prone cover is highly impressive as well.

Rarity: Scarce, hardly a major seller or commercial. This again was issued right near the very end of the red and maroon format time. Most are seen as the Kinney repressing with the orange and green labels and new catalogue number of K40251. Condition and pressing quality paramount, and this delivers on both accounts.

Musicians: Robert Margouleff & Malcolm Cecil play an expanded Series III Moog Synthesiser.

Brief Info: TONTO is an acronym for ‘The Original New Timbral Orchestra’: the world’s first (and still the largest) multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesiser, designed and constructed by Malcolm Cecil. It produced a unique sound, rich and warm with a capability of producing a very deep tone and cannot be recreated on modern and far smaller synths. This was a massive unit that resembled something more often seen at a space laboratory. TONTO resided at Mutato Muzika studios in the mid-1990s, the headquarters of Mark Mothersbaugh and Devo. This was the first Tonto’s Expanding Head Band album and caused attention with it’s groundbreaking sounds and still sounds interesting today. This is a predominately instrumental album with only a few ‘voice-like’ sounds – this is not Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream, this is a little different and a record to expand the mind. A genuinely scarce Plum copy and in amazing, hardly played condition with a wear-prone cover with very little. Get this on to a worthy system and here those amazing sounds moving the airways. I feel sure this title has only had a very limited issue on CD and to be honest I have never even seen one. What is certain, this copy was owned by a very careful collector who valued his collection. The record pressed to near classical standard and plays with very little unwanted – that a huge task on this one. With passages of very quiet sound, this is essential and this quite possibly the very best I have heard to date.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): with a small neat birthday gift dedication inside. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces.This being the Atlantic Plum original with the correct 2400 150 SUPER number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the polylined company inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Little to fault bar mild corner tip rubbing, mainly on the bottom left one. This front is clean and still fresh wtih minimal traces of any rubbing. No fading or sticker issues, a few light creases on the spine edge show little. This will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: Almost the same, there merest trace of a rim rub at the top, almost as light as it gets. A cover known to be prone to ring wear and rarely avoiding it, this is highly impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault bar the ‘21’ dedication just to the left of the fold hinge at the bottom. This very neat indeed.

Top Edges: Both thin, but straight and flush, any rubbing light, fine and very patchy.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing on the front, minimal on the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with hardly any thickening. Record enters on the back edge, neither trimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The ends have rubbed a little, but little inbetween. Solid, straight with minimal compression, a slight tilt to left being critical. Folded square with the edges being parallel. All the text matter fully present and unworn, this a real plus on a cover known not to wear well.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with very fine shape retained. No major knocks, the most rubbing on the very spine ends.

Cover Summary: A strong and attractive all-round example of this original, very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. The lack of ugly penetrating ring wear and rubbing is a real bonus, the inside dedication means not for purists, but it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a Polydor-style polylined inner sleeve that is date-coded 0571 (May 1971). Gently aged only with two crisp undamaged window circles, the lining fresh and clear. Minimal creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs. One very small spot on the back.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with superb shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence, and then with due care with any surface traces ultra light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Viewed in average room light, both sides look little short of immaculate with no penetrating stylus marks. Visually an age-defying fresh record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat groundbreaking first issue album plays up to, and most all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. This has some very quiet passages, so a quality pressing and well-looked after copy is essential – I do not think any copy of this will ever play ‘silent’, but this has minimal contact sounds. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
