TONY GALLA - "In Love" on Swan Records
#S-4275-I. Flip is #S-4275-G, "Guys Go For Girls". Etched matrix numbers are the same, with an added 'Virtue' (etched). Yellow label issue of classic 1966 Northern Soul track. Very mod-sounding piano (like early Moody Blues), good organ, great vocal effort... a great mod dancer. I've had the other label variations (it was issued several ways - black-print-on-white, silver-on-black). I believe the black labels credits The Rising Sons as well; this one doesn't. As far as I know all are considered to be 'first pressings', although I've seen it claimed both that this one (yellow label) and the white label one came out first. This is unquestionably an original pressing. I unearthed it from the collection of a local (Buffalo NY) old-timer who was 'there' at the time. FYI, I've never seen a fake / reissue/ '2nd pressing' in Buffalo! The originality is, of course, guaranteed.
CONDITION: Vinyl: very clean, quite glossy. This seems to be a styrene (or partially-styrene) pressing. Luckily it hasn't been 'played out', there's no greying of the grooves. This record plays NM even on the dead wax lead-in and intros (or as 'NM' as a 45 can sound). There's a small vinyl bubble on each side that has no effect on play & makes no sound. Other than that, nothing but a few typical styrene marks. I'm being really nit-picky with this one as it's an expensive record. (By the way, I grade with - not 100 watt bulbs - but with the spotlights in my ceiling that show everything.)
As far as a letter grade, it would give it as the very least a STRONG VG++ and it's arguably NM-. In my terminology, NM is usually my highest grade for 45s and it means absolutely perfect. NM- means very minor flaws; if you use the 'Mint' grade, my NM would equal your 'M' and my NM- would equal your 'NM'. Comparing it to some records I've bought lately (from veteran dealers whose grading is universally considered 'spot on'), I noticed they're a little more liberal with styrene records... I believe those guys would give this a NM- if not a NM. I just picked up some M- styrene records from one such fellow and they were exactly like this.
Labels are pretty clean, with only light wear - see photos. The photo (esp of the 'In Love' side) makes them look darker and dirtier than they actually are in person. I thought about using eBay's 'auto fixup' function to brighten that photo but it would have made it TOO (unnaturally) bright. Neither side has any writing or other extraneous distractions.
All original pressings - no reissues - unless noted. Graded conservatively. Visually graded, but any questionable records are playgraded. NM (Near Mint) is my highest for 45s but I use NM- more often. Labels, unless specifically noted otherwise, are NM with no writing, stamps, stickers, tears, drillholes, or other noteworthy defects.
USA shipping: First Class is $3.00 (see complete rates here) which usually covers up to THREE 45s.
