Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. This album has got to be the most crazed and manic thing that Roy Wood has ever done!! Wizzard itself was a rather schizophrenic aggregate, alternating raucous and fast loud rock (this album) with fussed over, Phil Spector-sounding pop singles. The year 1973 was their peak, which saw the release of this and 3 of their 4 biggest hit singles. Multi-instrumentalist (he plays A LOT of different instruments), band leader, and chief songwriter Roy Wood radically departs here from what fans may have expected of his earlier band The Move. This also is different from what followed later, which was his reputedly half-hearted involvement with the first Electric Light Orchestra album. We can't emphasize enough how much this thing rocks, or how loud it is - it's almost punk-ish at times ("Buffalo Station/Get On Down To Memphis" medley), yet isn't above featuring a long King Crimson-like instrumental passage in the middle of the rocking "Meet Me At The Jailhouse". It swings, it rocks, it's got it all! And here's why: The other half of the masterminds of the original ELO, Roy Wood left the orchestra in 1972 during the recording of their 2nd album. He then formed the group Wizzard and released the first album, 1973's Wizzard Brew...the unsuspecting may be in for a big surprise! It sounds like the logical step from ELO, mixing the heavy, sawing, close mic'd cellos and classical influences with a HEAVY-rock sludge and rockabilly GRIND. It's Wood mixing Shazam and Brontosaurus era Move with ELO's strings while adding the rock 'n roll of California Man, with strange studio tricks to create a crazy, mind bending experience.1. You Can Dance The Rock And Roll - Opening with a forceful cowbell led drum intro, You Can Dance The Rock 'n Roll soon belts into a woozy raver. The performance is lively but the effects of ring modulation and phasers keeps pushing the track back and forth in the mix, creating a disorientating mood. Seriously, listening to this with headphones will mess you up. The short, panning drum solo near the end of the song reminds of the similarly effected drum solo in MOVE's Open Up Said The World At The Door from Looking On.
2. Meet Me At The Jailhouse - This is the longest song on the album, clocking in at roughly 13 and a half minutes. It begins with a slow, intimidating chug, then dropping to have solo horns play from the left to right speakers. There's even a backwards sax part, which if you've never heard sax playing backwards, it's as scary as it sounds. It literally sounds like a swarm of bees is coming to attack you. At 2 minutes, the song proper kicks in, which reintroduces the heavy slow crawl of the intro. The song itself is a simple 12 bar rock 'n roll song, but the saturation of all those instruments and the effects makes it something different. The last 4 minutes is the song making you think it's going to end but always thundering back for more mania.
3. Jolly Cup of Tea - This isn't a song so much as it's pure procession. It sounds like the march of some new royalty or the old chaps coming back from the good war. It's only short, but brings a lightness and humour to the album, livening up the affair, before moving into the craziness of the rest of the album.
4. Buffalo Station/Get On Down To Memphis - A two part song with the first part Buffalo Station is a perfect aping of those fast uptempo rock songs that Chuck Berry was perfect at making. Nothing serious, just a stupid excuse to dance. After two minutes backwards, Hendrix like guitars enter before going right back to the song. After one more verse, a funky cowbell beat comes in, ushering the 2nd part of the song, Get On Down To Memphis. It's a funky heavy beat sound.
5. Gotta Crush (About You) - The 2nd shortest song on the album, Gotta Crush is a note perfect pastiche of those fast doo wop songs that you always see being horribly mimicked in 80's movies about the 50's. Roy puts on his best Elvis voice, being almost impossible to make out with all of his deep Elvis crooning.
6. Wear A Fast Gun - Ending the album on an epic fashion, the beautiful ballad Wear A Fast Gun, may be the least strange song on the album, with Roy's voice not being so effected. The song itself is an epic song of triumph, spread over 9 minutes. The end of the song features Penny Lane-esque horns coming in, brilliant! There is a Baroque section in the middle, capping the song off in a wonderful fashion.
This album isn't for perfect rock people. In fact, it's downright fucking insane, Wizzard Brew is balls to wall band experimentation. Roy showed off his songwriting skills far better in Wizzard's singles, but in the album context, he showed that Wizzard could be taken seriously as a competent experimental HARD-rock band.
