Legendary album from japanese experimental artist Toshi Tsuchitori, this was the 3rd release of the D.Y.M. label, a tiny independent japan-american label, distributed by Bellows, Tsuchitori put out his main output on DYM. All releases from DYM were strictly limited editions, that's why you don't come accross his albums, but scarcely. Known also for his release on the ALM label from the 70's with Mototeru Tagaki. Toshi Tsuchitori is a familiar name if you are acquainted with Japanese mid-seventies free jazz. He has backed up Kaoru Abe, joined Bailey on his tour through Japan, and played with Mototeru Takagi, Steve Lacy, and countless others. But this shouldn't fool anybody, very hard to categorize it as a jazz recording. Recorded at Ife, Nigeria, in the parts that feature a drums ensemble and solo at New York at Soundscape. This was his first ever solo recording and what a disc it was. Hard to catalogue it as merely drums but it would be fair to pull it open to avant-garde and improvisation, deploying a wide range of percussive instruments, voice, tribal rhythms, gongs and just everything he could lay his hands on. Impressive tour de force that easily rivals Milford Graves percussion escapades. Stunning cover art and so bloody hard to come by, like any disc documenting mid-seventies Japanese improvisation that was released in real time.
Vinyl grades vg++ to ex-, while cover is vg, nothing bad if you don't like cut out, writing, sticker. Might appeal to fans of experimental, psych, progressive John Cage, Pierre Henry, musique concrete, Broken Music, Stockhausen, Xenakis, AMM, David Tudor, Pierre Schaeffer, Henri Chopin, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, Alvin Curran, Stockhausen, Xenakis, La Monte Young, Nurse with wound, Asmus Tietchens, Zoviet France, Hafler Trio, John Duncan, Leif Ellgrenn, Hausswolff, Merzbow, Organum and similar!
