Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. I have no doubts, this has hardly been played.

Cat Number: SML 1033.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A typical top quality and solid Decca pressing.

Rarity: Rare: this would have sold in very small numbers and is another of those almost ‘lost’ Deram records from this time. To find one in such outstanding condition also makes it even more special and elusive. Both cover and record are exceptional and to put the icing on the cake – it includes the very rare poster which is Mint and unmounted. It looks immaculate and it’s one of the top drawer posters with a lovely design. Few of these will ever been seen and those that do surface, how many will will not have been wall-mounted? This is a work-of-art and looks fantastic, my first ever copy of this album.

Brief Info: Described on the Net as ‘very rare’, and I totally agree – this was a one-off album that even with the inclusion of a colourful cover and beautiful poster, failed to attract any real attention or sales. Touch played a form of progressive rock and with a high degree of skill as well. Quite challenging and a real grower. The recordings apparently were attended by Mick Jagger, Grace Slick and Jimi Hendrix at the recordings at Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood. The album has a high-tech sound and production and some amazing sounds that seem to pre-date the technology around at the time. This a rare opportunity to own a copy that comes very close to reminding of new – that is for looks AND sound, this is little short of connoisseur quality.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): and I would have considered a Mint grading but for a small chip on the bottom corner. A gatefold format with a laminated front and back. The inside is matt and smooth finished. The laminate ends on the inside bottom edges which have remained clean with minimal amount of pulling. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse International with the ‘Patends pending’ text. A mono/stereo peep-hole is included, the blue inner denotes this is a stereo copy. This one includes the superb poster.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both in STUNNING condition and truly look almost like new. Very clear, fresh and shiny laminate that even under light, shows barely even a hint of any friction rubs or dulling. There merest trace of rim impression on the back that is near impossible to avoid with a thick heavy record inside for 43 years. Any of the few surface creases are tiny, fine and very faint hairlines on the edges – barely any at all on the front and the peep-hole is immaculate as seen in close-up. If that were not enough, the thing that makes this even more exceptional is the total lack of any lifting or non-adhesion. So the stunning artwork looks breathtaking. It is even difficult finding a noteworthy surface trace mark and there are NO press marks or indentations. A cover of reference class, this is not to be missed.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A fine and faint end-of-laminate ‘pull’ trace on the bottom left that few, if any will avoid. This is as minor and faint as they get and that apart, this centrefold looks almost new.

Top Edges: Solid, straight and unworn. The back right near the corner has a slightly rough feel to the fingertip which is probably a tiny adhesive smear in manufacture – nit-picking now.

Bottom Edges: Both immaculate, practically as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild, small and faint. Both ends open to accomodate the record and poster separately and these are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A gentle tilt to the right and a fairly small chip (or rub) to the bottom corner. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. A tiny peel to the bottom near the chip.

Corners: Any other corner rubs or chips are tiny, few and faint. All retain better than excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A beautifully fresh and colourful cover, a near top all-round example and rarely, if ever will a better example go on the open market. This hugely impressive item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): the polylined blue Decca inner is equally impressive and is practically devoid of any creasing. Aged little with rich colour and the lining very clear as seen through two pristine window circles. Any toning to the seam adhesive tiny and faint and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has the UK patents applications number from 1969 and has ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. This blue inner fills the cover’s rear peep-hole window to denote this is a stereo copy.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: unmounted, clean and fresh and looking quite stunning. Even the white back has not aged or toned and the folds sold and unstressed. Few owners could have resisted putting this on a wall or even framing, but this is practically as made. No creases any crinkle almost minuscule. Will a better one ever be seen or made available?

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): this being critical on a clearly hardly played record. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. One fine hairline on side one and a few ultra fine surface traces on side two, quite possibly there from new seen critically under angled light. A copy hardly run-in in vinyl terms with nigh-on pristine sound throughout. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Deram record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Decca for me were the premier pressing company and this record quality is simply top-drawer. No pressing noises or imperfections, the complex sound and production is heard to absolute maximum advantage. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this original first issue I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
