Released in spring 1974, Back to Oakland marked a creative high point for Bay Area funk institution Tower of Power. Building on the success of their self-titled gold album, the band sharpened every element to perfection with tougher grooves, tighter production and a fully confident lead vocal turn from Lenny Williams. The horn section hits hard but with precision and helped reaffirm their dominance across soul, funk and pop, while cuts like 'Don't Change Horses' crackle with momentum and 'Time Will Tell' reveals a refined, emotional depth. The album's influence even earned Modern Drummer's acclaim and has been long revered by musicians as well as funk heads.
