This listing is for an ULTRA RARE 1968 DJ promotional mono pressing of For the Sake of the Song, the landmark debut album by legendary Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, released by Poppy Records (PY-40,001 / PYS-40,001).

Produced by Jack Clement and Jim Malloy, the album includes early versions of several Townes Van Zandt classics, including “Tecumseh Valley,” “Waitin’ Around to Die,” and the title track “For the Sake of the Song.” Widely regarded as one of the foundational albums of outlaw country and modern folk songwriting, the record introduced Van Zandt’s deeply poetic style, which would later influence generations of artists including Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson.

This original promotional mono edition features striking cover artwork designed by legendary graphic artist Milton Glaser, best known for creating the iconic “I ♥ NY” logo, and includes “Disc Jockey Record – NOT FOR SALE” labels.

Released during the industry’s shift from mono to stereo formats, original mono promo copies were pressed in limited quantities and distributed primarily to radio stations. This copy comes from the original owner’s former radio station collection. The vinyl remains in pristine condition, while the jacket shows some age and handling wear, including spine wear and ring wear, but still presents in very good condition.

NEAR MINT (NM or M?)

Vinyl looks freshly opened with full gloss and no visible marks, spindle wear, or surface noise. Sleeve is crisp and clean with no creases, seam splits, or ring wear.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

Vinyl shows light signs of use, possibly a few minor scuffs or hairlines that do not affect play. Sleeve may show slight wear, including light edge wear, a small crease, or minimal ring wear.

Very Good (VG)

Vinyl has visible surface wear and light scratches, with occasional surface noise but no skips. Sleeve shows moderate wear such as ring wear, seam splits, writing, or creasing.

Good (G), Good Plus (G+), or Very Good Minus (VG?)

Vinyl plays through without skipping but has varying degrees of heavy wear, significant surface noise, and visible damage or label defects. Sleeve is heavily worn, with large seam splits, major ring wear, heavy writing, and/or tape/sticker damage.

Poor (P) or Fair (F)

Vinyl is cracked, warped, or skips during playback and is typically unplayable. Sleeve is extremely damaged or destroyed, with severe tears, water damage, or missing elements.
