Tracy Chapman is the self-titled debut album by singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, released on April 5, 1988, by Elektra Records. The album was recorded at the Powertrax studio in Hollywood, California. In 1987, Chapman was discovered by fellow Tufts University student Brian Koppelman. He offered to show her work to his father, who owned a successful publishing company, however she did not consider the offer to be serious. However, after multiple performances, Koppelman found a demo tape of her singing her single "Talkin' Bout a Revolution", which he promoted to radio stations, and she was eventually signed to Elektra Records.

In early attempts to produce the first album, many producers turned down Chapman as they did not favor her musical direction. However, David Kershenbaum decided to produce the studio album as he wanted to record an acoustic music album. The album was recorded in Hollywood, California in only eight weeks. Most of the writing is based on political and social causes.

Tracy Chapman gained critically acclaim from a wide majority of music critics, praising the simplicity, Chapman's vocal ability and the lyrical content. They also noticed the political and social lyrical content. Tracy Chapman received commercial success in most of the countries it was released in. The album made it to the top of the charts in many countries, including Austria, New Zealand, Switzerland, Denmark and the United Kingdom. The album peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200, and was certified 6x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with sales exceeding over six million copies in the United States alone.

Three singles were released from the album, with the most commercially successful single being "Fast Car". The song was performed at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute. It rose to the top ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 and also did well in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, United Kingdom and other European countries.

All records are professionally cleaned using a MOTH cleaning system prior to despatch. Not only does this wet clean/vacuuming process remove surface marks such as fingerprints, etc, it also significantly reduces background noise and many argue that the lower noise floor results in opening up of the sound and improved fidelity.

A word about hairline marks. It is almost impossible to find any non-sealed record without any hairline marks - many had them from new, particularly if sold with cardboard inner sleeves. They are a result of storage and use and have little impact on sound quality.

I package my records in the strongest purpose made mailers for maximum safety.

All records are removed from their picture sleeves where appropriate and posted in a separate plain white inner to avoid damage during transit.

The following is the scale I use to grade my records and is to be used in conjunction with the "Hi Res" photos contained in each listing , please buy with confidence.

MINT:

The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks

or deterioration in sound quality.

The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

Records advertised as sealed or un-played should be mint.

EXCELLENT:

The record shows some signs of having been played,

but there is very little lessening in sound quality.

The vinyl may have some minor hairline surface scuffs which may be visible.

The cover and packaging might have minor wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD:

The record has obviously been played many times,

but displays no major deterioration in sound quality,

despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.

Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items,

is acceptable.

GOOD:

The record has been played so much

that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated.

perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.

The cover suffers from folding, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

This calculation does not apply to orders over 2kg in weight (5 lp's is usually just under 2kg). Orders over 2kg in weight may have to be split into 2 or more packages to ensure shipping is as cost effective as possible and a combined invoicewill be sent at the end of the auction.
