The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys marked the commercial and artistic apex of the second coming of Traffic, which had commenced in 1970 with John Barleycorn Must Die. The trio that made that album had been augmented by three others (Ric Grech, Jim Gordon and "Reebop Kwaku Baah) in the interim, though apparently the Low Spark sessions featured varying combinations of these musicians, plus some guests. Winwood returns to his R & B roots. Released two years after the excellent and deservedly very successful BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE, ROLL WITH IT sees Steve Winwood moving back more towards his roots, and returning to a somewhat more traditional rhythm and blues sound. Rather than complex synthesizer and percussion arrangements, ROLL WITH IT is dominated by piano and organ with punchy horns from the famed American trumpet/sax duo -
The Memphis Horns and the drums of John Robinson. The use of these natural rhythm section instruments gives the album a somewhat more organic and flowing feel than its predecessor and is exactly why this pressing delivers as Audiophile. The powerful production sound of Tom Lord Alge has evoked significantly and gives the record a very bright and urgent quality, and even the cover, showing a mature Winwood looking self-assured in jeans and leather jacket, hints at the tough and uncompromising R&B style of the record. Songs like “Shining Song” and “Roll With It” are worth of all the airplay they have ever gotten. Everything on this LP is Audiophile, most of it borders on great, but “Don’t You Kow What The Night Can Do” is completely unforgettable

Riding fairly high on the success of their singles, the band, whose members included Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood and Dave Mason, released its 1967 debut LP, which also soon shot up to the number 16 slot on the UK albums chart. Aided by their use of unusual instruments (Winwood played the organ, Wood played flute and Mason the sitar) they created a hybrid of pop/blues rock with a sound that was somewhat unique for the time and which soon made them international superstars. Music critic, Michael Fremer, editor of The Tracking Angles and contributing editor for Stereophile, said about this MCA Heavy Vinyl re-mastered from the Original Analog Tapes (with no noise suppression or bass roll-off) that “music erupts out of total silence from these thick 180 Gram Virgin Vinyl discs with a velvety smoothness, spaciousness, and ultra high resolution that stuns even the most committed CD die-hard.”
Alone Together has an absolute All-Star lineup accompanying Dave Mason of Bonnie & Delaney - Leon Russell - Jim Keltner - Carl Radle - Rita Coolidge - Jim Gordon - and from Traffic - Jim Capaldi. With so many artists, Dave Mason’s solo debut album is probably his best. Perhaps it is because he had a backlog of songs that Traffic had never recorded, but 1970’s Alone Together is chock-full of great songs. On the other hand, it’s easy to see why Mason left Traffic even before that group’s (temporary) breakup in 1969. The soft rock sound of Alone Together is hard to place in the context of the jazz/pop experiments Traffic would explore when they re-united in 1971.
The eight lengthy songs take time to unfold and the peerless musicianship with Mason’s lyrical guitar and Leon Russell’s inimitable boogey soul piano in the center, threads the line between chops and soul with nary a mis-step. This album includes the classic song - Only You Know And I Know -- Shouldn’t Have Took More Than You Gave - World In Changes - Look At You Look At Me - and much more.
