Caronte (Charon) is the second album released by the Italian progressive rock band The Trip, in 1971. It is a concept album based on the Charon character from Dante's Divine Comedy, recast as a metaphor of conformism; Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin are mentioned, respectively in songs Ultima ora e ode a Jimi Hendrix ("The last hour and ode to Jimi Hendrix") and Little Janie, as victims of a conformist society.Caronte was the most successful release of the band. With respect to their previous, debut album, which was mostly blues-oriented, Caronte was a major drift towards British-style progressive rock, with obvious influences from King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and, to some extent, Pink Floyd. Joe Vescovi, keyboardist and leader of the band, was at the time a self-proclaimed imitator of Keith Emerson.

Caronte, pubblicato nel 1971, fu l'album di maggior successo dei Trip. A differenza del disco precedente (The Trip, 1970), ancora molto legato al rock e al blues anni sessanta, Caronte si ispira chiaramente al rock progressivo britannico, e in particolare a gruppi come King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer e (in misura minore) Pink Floyd. Gli arrangiamenti, ricchi di contaminazioni con la musica classica, cambiamenti di ritmo, effetti musicali psichedelici e armonie complesse, sono dominati dalle tastiere di Joe Vescovi, emulo ligure di Keith Emerson.

Caronte è un concept album; la storia narrata dai testi riprende il tema dantesco del traghettatore Caronte, reinterpretato però come metafora del perbenismo che condanna i suoi "maledetti" a perdersi ("attraversare il fiume"). I due grandi maledetti a cui l'album si riferisce sono Janis Joplin e Jimi Hendrix
