Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks light, fine and faint with no wear around the hole area. Indeed side one has only one minute trace and this beautiful record appears hardly played.

Rarity: Rare: this album was probably considered a ‘loss-leader’ by CBS and pretty much was, even the album’s title was not even displayed on the front cover or spine. But this is a true folk-rock classic that largely slipped under the radar – mine very much included at the time. In fact it was only into my late forties that this fantastic band made aware to me by recommendation – and was instantly addicted. This is seldom seen or offered as a genuine UK first issue, and rarer still in anything like top condition. This is a lovely hardly played example with sound to match.

Brief Info: Trees made just two albums – both are sublime in my opinion – they were give little chance to flourish back in the day with scant promotion and less than fair reviews. Dubbed by some as another Fairport Convention, largely dismissed, overlooked and fading away. But has there ever been such injustice for any band? Celia Humphris is a wonderful singer with a gorgeous voice and there is some superb guitar-work as well. The songs are a mix of traditional and orignal material, sure comparisons with Sandy Denny era Fairport Convention is fair – but in my opinion, Trees match the brilliance of the pink Island era of the far more famous band. Like many ‘lost’ classics, both the Trees albums are now treasured within the folk-rock genre and are hugely sort-after. This was the first of the two they made – I am also offering the arguably rarer second as well – both are fantastic. Like several other folk and folk-rock bands of the era like Tudor Lodge, Mellow Candle and Comus, Trees albums came and went unnoticed and quickly deleted, thus few are seen or offered. Indeed both albums are my first ever available to offer on Ebay and a rare opportunity for fans and collectors of top-quality folk – this a very fine example with sound to match.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and probably worthy of a (+). A wear-prone single unlaminated cover with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited, suspect by Shorewood as many CBS covers in this style often were. Includes the ‘Heavy on CBS’ inner sleeve.

Cover Front: These style of covers rarely wear well, and this with a 160 gram record inside for around 45 years. So a little mild rubbing and quite light rim impression is almost the least to be expected. Just the odd light surface crease that shows little and any marks equally few, small and light as seen under angled light. Overall, a very fine front that still looks attractive and artwork impressive.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, only a mild inner flipback pressure line near the top that is near impossible to avoid totally. As per the front, this retains excellent colour with no fading and the lack of ringwear a huge plus, as is the lack of creasing.

Top Edge: Straight with minimal traces of any rubbing of wear.

Bottom Edge: As above, and this impressive for the traditional storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, light and mostly minor crinkle here and there. All text is perfect and unworn with any surface rubbing to the spine conspicuous by its absence. So often these types are seen threadbare with no text, this is near exceptional put into context.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny and very light. All retain excellent shape with no dinks and barely any creasing at all.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this deceptively fragile and seldom-seen early 1970’s cover, one that is highly likely prove difficult to find much better. This attractive, is somewhat basic cover should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined thin paper CBS ‘Heavy on CBS’ promotional inner sleeve. Only mildly darkened with age and hardly any other wear or issues worthy of special mention. Barely creased and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed, especially for a CBS record post 1960. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Just one tiny mark emits 4 mainly light clicks, these near the start of track two side two – I had to use a magnifier to even find the tiny culprit – I would be highly confident it was there from new. Little else to fault and this is a superbly pressed example that was a joy to play-grade. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors. It will take an amazing example to better this and how many 44+ year old records will not have the odd tiny blemish as the barest minimum?

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault bar the tiny few clicks as mentioned above. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Beautiful songs, vocals and music on this very heavy CBS original, this was a pure joy from beginning to end, few copies will match, let along outperform this lovely clean pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Being honest, all indication emphasises this record has hardly been played at all, and no damaging old stylus have ruined this precious copy. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – the odd gentle click or blemish has almost to be expected from such vintage vinyl, and this has quiet passages. Also I play all my records on highly revealing equipment as listed further down in detail. This record, and also the cover are likely to prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A wonderful band that are now cherished by folk collectors, truly, they hardly get better than Trees and the sublime Celia Humphris. For those still yet to discover this tragically overlooked band, I cannot recommend them highly enough.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
