Notes
Not much to be said - great LP!
ALLMUSIC 4.5: This [LP] contains nine versions of one single piece, "Face to Face." It is a set-up composition, not written but devised: Drummer John Stevens and soprano saxophonist Trevor Watts were placed face to face and they played at each other, with each musician attempting to become so focused on the other's playing that his own playing happened on a subconscious level. Now, even though all the music is credited to Stevens, who devised the piece, it should be understood that Watts brought just as many ideas. After all, this is free improvisation.
Face to Face captures the Spontaneous Music Ensemble in November and December 1973, a moment when the group was reduced to this duo, allowing Stevens to refine his approach to free playing. The music is stripped of any outside reference and emotional background. It may be austere, but it is not cerebral -- no calculations here, only musicians deeply listening to each other's input, understanding each other at a subatomic level. All tracks begin in a similar way: Stevens plays light cymbals, Watts utters quiet staccato notes in the high register -- with one exception, "Face to Face 5," where Stevens takes out his cornet. From this point on anything can (and does) happen.
The last recording, "Face to Face 7," remains one of the most brilliant examples of free improv duet playing in terms of absolute synergy ... This album is essential to understand the development of scaled-down free improv in England.

RECORD GRADING
Finegroove loves all music and we have thousands of LPs of all genres. Keep your eyes on us - please subscribe to our store newsletter. We use eBay's standardized grading scale (although some older listings have not yet been updated). We primarily sight-grade LPs, but we play-grade LPs when we can. Our primary playback system uses a sensitive moving coil cartridge (Clearaudio Stradivari V2) with vacuum tube based amplification (Audio Research). As many of you know, the type of cartridge, turntable setup, preamplification, etc. can produce a significantly different listening experience, particularly on less than Near Mint LPs. A old classic LP in VG+ condition can sound fantastic with a Moving Magnet cartridge and warm tube amplification, but can be annoying with a sensitive MC cartridge and digital solid state amplification. We try to grade and price records with these thoughts in mind and we welcome your feedback on our grading, particularly if you are dissatisfied with the LP.
MINT: LP is sealed or like-new; Cover is sealed or like-new
NEAR MINT: LP is visually clean and will play without background sound; Cover is clean & tight.
EXCELLENT: LP may have light sleeve scuffs or marks that have little to no effect on playback; Cover may have slight wear but is still very nice.
VERY GOOD PLUS: LP will have superficial lines or sleeve scuffs and the LP may have a little background noise noticeable during quiet sections; Cover may have ring wear and tiny corner dings. VG+ is our grade for a VINYL & MUSIC LOVER ... some great deals here!
VERY GOOD: LP may have light scratches & scuffs and will play with occasional background noise; Covers may have ring wear, small tears and dinged corners - still a great LP and a great deal!
GOOD: LP will play without skipping but has background noise; Cover may have split seams, water and other physical damage - for rare LPs and retro vinyl lovers.
