Trevor Wishart "Red Bird" LP issued by the composer for his Yes Records (YES 7) in the UK, 1978. ****** Rec:m- Cov:ex ****** This rare LP, a classic on the Nurse With Wound list of influences, features the composer's most striking music! "Red Bird" is a 45-minute piece of musique concrète in four movements. Made for the most part of bird and animal sounds, body sounds, mechanisms, and selected mouthed words, it weaves an intricate network of symbols. Completed in 1977, it was made with traditional electro-acoustic techniques. It has a crude tape splicing aspect that aged surprisingly well. Often brutal in its contrasts, it presents interesting sound transformations, but most of all a dense, relentless abstract drama that compares very well to Pierre Henry's best works from the '60s and '70s. The result of four years of work, "Red Bird" is a significant work and conveys ideas of imprisonment and freedom that are beautifully expressed. In "Red Bird" vocal sounds are changed into metallic hammers, a book slammed closed becomes a slammed door... a vast array of recorded sounds shift and slowly morph into other sounds, and the effect is magical! Rumours abound of this being the Wishart LP specified in Stapleton's list (adorning the fold of the "Chance Meeting" LP), not surprising seeing the contained seminal vox-murk, sonic transformations, primalcy, etc... influentially evident in Nurse With Wound titles from just later. An amazing document, this and completely essential! Wishart was born 1946 in Leeds, England. He grew up there and would spend most of his working life in Northern England. Little is known about his musical upbringing, but he started to work with recorded sounds in 1969, in reaction to the death of his father. Abandoning traditional composition, he began collecting sounds of machinery. The 1970s saw him very active, splitting his time between electro-acoustic composition, site specific projects ("Beach Singularity," 1977), work with amateur and community groups (he collaborated with Interplay, a team of music street workers), and the development of new workshop techniques. This fertile period yielded "Red Bird," a compelling tape work five years in the making (1973-1977) that first expressed his fascination with sound transformation. The piece was awarded a Euphonie d'Or by the Bourges Festival. A fantastic experimental LP, a true inspiration for NWW strategies! ****** This copy comes directly from the hands of Trevor Wishart.
