"TROOPER HOOK" (1957) Music by GERALD FRIED "TROOPER HOOK" was a much underrated Western from the fifties, starring Joel McCrea and Barbara Stanwyck. GERALD FRIED scored the film, and MITZI CUMMINGS FIELDING wrote the lyrics that TEX RITTER sings on this unique CAPITOL recording. What makes it unique is that it is the story, told with music and lyrics,through two sides of this single, and it is NOT a catchy ditty that is easy to 'sing'. Ritter does it in a style not usually associated with his singing. The music is conducted by the composer and it has the sound of film scoring, despite the vocal. It is really quite something, and hard to know what market CAPITOL Records were aiming for. I haven't been able to verify it, but it does appear RITTER may have sung a version of this on the soundtrack, much as he had with HIGH NOON and many others after that. CAPTIOL record number F3754. Other than a sticker on the label, it is in NEAR MINT condition. THE PLOT: After a band of Indians kill a group of soldiers, Sergeant Hook captures them and their leader Nanches. Among the prisoners is Nanches' son and the boy's white mother captured by them nine years earlier. Hook's assignment is to escort the mother and son to the woman's husband.
