GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED

Copertine e vinili sono visualmente gradati dopo un’attenta osservazione sotto la luce del sole fatta sulla mia terrazza a tetto. Nelle giornate grigie il controllo viene effettuato sotto una forte lampada alogena con l’aiuto di una lente d’ingrandimento. Tutti i dischi in asta sono stati interamente ascoltati, i 33 giri su un giradischi Rega Planar 3 fornito di una testina a magnete mobile Grado Statement 1 mentre gli EP e i singoli a 45 giri con un Thorens TD 166 BC fornito di una testina, sempre MM, Goldring 1006. Ritenendo che le abituali classificazioni quali Mint, Ex, Vg, ecc., ecc… siano poco significative per spiegare le reali condizioni dei dischi ed anche estremamente soggettive, precedo sempre tali classificazioni con una breve descrizione degli eventuali difetti che ho riscontrato, ad eccezione di Mint- che il più alto grado che conferisco a qualsiasi disco. Soltanto per le copie ancora sigillate all’origine utilizzo MINT/MINT.

Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All records in auction have been fully heard. Lps on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with a Grado Statement 1 moving magnet cartridge, EPs and singles 45 rpm. on a Thorens TD 166 BC turntable with a Goldring 1006 MM cartridge. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.

Note : un interessante album ricco di buon rock con piccole venature di surf, psichedelia, country e pop. Potrà apparire strano il mio accenno alla musica surf in maniera un poco riduttiva ma pur trattandosi di una colonna sonora per un documentario sul famosissimo sport acquatico in California, la sua musica non possiede caratteristiche così rilevanti da poter essere inclusa in quella categoria musicale. Inoltre si tenga conto che la musica dei Truckin' non rivela un chiaro riferimento ai gruppi degli anni 60 come i Beach Boys, gli Chantays o Dick Dale & The Del Tones ma piuttosto una trasformazione del garage rock con sonorità più sofisticate e meno aspre.  Al di là di tutto questo, la band che ha composto anche la musica e le liriche della colonna sonora è validissima. Malauguratamente non è stato possibile trovare i nomi dei suoi membri e posso soltanto dire che gli strumenti musicali sono chitarra, basso, tastiere, tromba e sassofono, batteria, banjo (solo in b3) mentre nel canto abbiamo sia una voce femminile che una maschile. Va comunque osservato che il supervisore musicale dell'album fu Denny Diante che ha lavorato con un'infinità di importanti artisti come Elton John, Paul Anka, Barbra Streisand, Bill Whiters, Grateful Dead e via dicendo. Non da meno pure il produttore esecutivo Spencer Proffer con all'attivo dischi dei Cheap Trick, Outlaws, Ian Hunter, Stevie Wonder, Quiet Riot, Billy May...

Qualche brano da segnalare: "Liquid Space" (a1) con fraseggi di batteria piuttosto intensi, intervento dei fiati mentre il ritmo scorre più veloce per l‘intervento della chitarra e del piano elettrico con ottime sonorità, e finalmente l'ingresso dei due cantanti, tutto questo in un'ottima e sofisticata canzone rock. "Requiem for Eddie" (a3) che parte con le note blueseggianti della chitarra e la bella voce della cantante con il supporto delle percussioni, successivamente anche la voce maschile entra in gioco, il ritmo si fa via via più sostenuto grazie anche al rimarchevole basso. "Hymn One" (a5) è quasi uno spiritual con il canto della donna e coro in sottofondo più tardi impreziosito dai suoni lenti ma belli della chitarra. "Trees" (b2), forse la migliore traccia dell’album, è caratterizzata da un ritmo vivacissimo con bruschi arresti e ripartenze. Bella la presenza della chitarra anche in un assolo così come la tromba, ottimo drumming e buona vocalità dei due cantanti. "My Turn’s Comin' 'Round" (b3) è una ballata country cantata dalla donna con la presenza del banjo. "Ridin' on a rainbow" (b6) in cui organo e chitarra con il buon supporto della batteria danno vita a una ritmica molto decisa e accompagnano il canto dell'uomo.

Notes : an interesting album full of good rock with small veins of surf, psychedelia, country and  pop. It may seem strange my mention to the surf music in a a bit reductive way but despite being the soundtrack of a documentary about Californian surfing its score does not have such important characteristics to be included in that category of music. In addition keep in mind that Truckin’s music does not express an evident connection to the bands of the 60s such as the Beach Boys, the Chantays and Dick Dale & The Del Tones but rather a transformation of garage rock in a more sophisticated and less harsh sonorities. Apart from all this, the band that has also composed the music and lyrics of the soundtrack is well gifted. Unfortunately it was not possible to find the names of its members and I can only say that music instruments are the guitar, bass, keyboards, trumpet, saxophone, drums, banjo (b3 only) while in the singing we have female and male vocals . However, please note that the musical supervisor was Denny Diante who has worked with a multitude of important artists such as Elton John, Paul Anka, Barbra Streisand, Bill Whiters, Grateful Dead and so on and so forth. No less important also the executive producer Spencer Proffer with a personal portfolio of recordings by Cheap Trick, Outlaws, Ian Hunter, Stevie Wonder, Quiet Riot, Billy May ....

Some tracks to be reported: "Liquid Space" (a1) with a pretty intense drumming and brass instruments while the rhythm runs faster for the presence of the guitar and electric piano from beautiful sonorities, and finally the appearance of both singers, all this in a very good and sophisticated rock song. "Requiem for Eddie" (a3) that starts with the bluesy notes of the guitar and the beautiful voice of the female singer with the support of the percussion, later also the male voice comes into play and the rhythm becomes increasingly hectic even through a remarkable bass. "Hymn One" (a5) almost a spiritual with the woman's voice and chorus in the background, subsequently enhanced by the slow but beautiful sound of the guitar. "Trees" (b2), perhaps the best track on the album, is characterized by an extremely lively rhythm with sudden breaks. Beautiful presence of the guitar even in solo as well as the trumpet, great drumming and good vocals of the two singers.  "My Turn’s Comin' 'Round" (b3) is a country ballad sung by the woman with the presence of the banjo. "Ridin' on a Rainbow" (b6), wherein organ and guitar with good support of the drums gives life to a frantic rhythm and accompany the singing of the man.

Un documentario sul surf in California diretto dallo specialista di questo genere, Dale Davis. Con la partecipazione di grandi campioni dell'epoca come Mike Purpus, Jeff Hakman, Owl Chapman, Rory Russell e molti altri ancora.
