Description

DONALD LINDLEY was a very talented trumpet player and composer / arranger in New York in the late '20s - a guy about whom we need to know a LOT more!  He had a VERY cool style, unlike Bix or Louis or any of the "hot" guys, and a Delius-like impressionist streak as a composer.  He made only a few sides, all of which are of interest, whether he's a player, a writer, or both. A VERY fly cat, an outlier for sure!  


On this Columbia record, made on the last day of 1925, Lindley assays two of his modernistic compositions, "TRUMPET BLUES" and "SWEET STUFF" Accompanied by the great ARTHUR SCHUTT on piano, Lindley sounds like no less than the '20s counterpart to Miles Davis!  I suppose Donald went straight from this recording gig to his nightly job with Don Voorhees' Earl Carroll's Vanities Orchestra. New Years' Eve Party! Hello 1926! Whoopee!  


This original 1925 (1926, really) "Viva-Tonal" Columbia 546-D is in splendid EE+ condition.
