Truth And Janey - No Rest For The Wicked LP. Near exact vinyl reissue of this cult classic U.S. underground hard rock record from 1976, by Iowa's legendary power trio led by guitarist BillyLee Janey. Since the original private label release of ?No Rest for the Wicked' in 1976, its stature among collectors of 60?s and 70?s hard rock and psychedelia has grown steadily over the years, with original copies now fetching huge sums in the collector?s market. It has often been lauded by critics and collectors as perhaps the best independent U.S. heavy rock release of the entire 1970?s. Truth and Janey were the real deal. So many hallowed psych discs from the 70s have become beloved due to limited press, cool artwork, snob appeal and a handful of heavy tracks (typically balanced by puffy prog or erratic funk explorations). Thankfully, this obscure disc from the rock ‘n roll capitol of the world (Des Moines IA) ticks all the boxes from the creepy backwoods cover shot to blaring fuzz riffs, to superb vocals and a ballsy mix. It’s one of those times the $1500 price tag for original vinyl doesn’t seem far-fetched, considering the quality of the material inside.
Not only does the record deliver copious doses of power trio goodies, guitarist Bill Janey isn’t afraid to track guitar harmonies (usually a no-no for this type of lineup), best evidenced in “The Light”, rays of harmonized beauty bounding from the speakers, supplanting Steven Bock’s sturdy bass rumblings and shining vocals. The 9-minute jam “Remember” bounces through rhythmic shifts and passionate, feral riffing in the vein of early Rush and Mountain, glossy guitar voicings underlaying the riff-plowing with a sharp, classy resonance. The title track is built on an earthy, unhinged beast of a riff, just a fuming mass of molten tube-amp energy pushed to mad levels of heaviness by drummer Denis Bunce, and closer “My Mind” ends things with an introspective, raw/melodic vibe not unlike the rougher-edged BÖC material.
“No Rest for the Wicked” is an excellent place to begin a pilgrimage down the madcap rabbit hole of heavy psych. Just don’t expect every hallowed grail to kick ass like this one. It’s one of the few times when crazed expressions and Elvis sideburns lead to a group of roguish truck stop evangelists spreading the gospel of the heavy the way Satan intended.
