A truly excellent copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1961 UK very first pressing jazz classic, on the FONTANA label, MONO TFL 5183

The appearance and overall condition of the heavy, flat vinyl is excellent plus (EX+). Gleaming vinyl with a jet black sheen giving a beautiful and near perfect appearance in normal daylight. It is only with close inspection under a bright light that just a few very wispy hairlines and extremely faint paper scuffs come into view, all of which are purely superficial and do not impinge upon the wonderful audio quality at all. Clearly this record has been played sparingly and the condition of the vinyl is amazing considering it's 58 year antiquity. It is now becoming very difficult to find UK Fontana first pressings with original vinyl in as good a condition as this.

The labels are excellent (EX). The black matt textured background with all of the silver writing and Fontana logo remain completely intact and in truly excellent condition. There are just a couple of very light, very faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label, otherwise perfect. 

The condition of the front side laminated outer sleeve is very good plus (VG+). All edges remain rigid and the front side photo and colouring remains vibrant and clear - impressive. The top edge has barely any scuffing at all but the bottom edge has some light intermittent scuffing and there are a few minor "nicks" on the spine where all text remains intact and perfectly legible. The corners are nicely defined right angles but there is some mild rubbing/scuffing on each and a 3mm split on the bottom right corner. The laminate is in overall very good condition though there are x7 very light laminate creases on the front side adjacent and perpendicular to the spine. The reverse side is in similarly VG+ condition with some very mild, but visible, age spotting and x4 surface creases on the flip back adjacent to the spine. Otherwise the flip backs are excellent and there is no unwanted writing or doodles with all text remaining perfectly intact. Not perfect but  but certainly VG+ overall and remaining highly presentable.

Finally, the quality of the audio is excellent...brilliant in fact. Great tone and clarity throughout with no skips, repeats, jumps or nasty clicks. I am not going to say that there is absolutely no background crackle because there is just the hint of some faint background interference at the beginning and end of each side, but it really is insignificant and I am sure is down to some specks of dust in the grooves through decades of storage for which a proper clean would remedy...the vinyl itself (as already stated) is in at least excellent condition and has clearly been sparingly played. This record plays like a dream with each and every track making for a great listen. Sit back and wallow in the wonderful musicianship of Tubby Hayes on tenor sax at the top of his game, the superb Horace Parlan (piano), George Duvivier (bass), Dave Bailey (drums), Clark Terry (trumpet), and Eddie Costa (vibes). Amazing stuff!

Comes with plain white inner sleeve with no tears or splits, just some mild creasing. Note that I always post the record in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.

In summary a very good plus copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1961 UK 1st pressing jazz classic with the highlight being the impressive condition of the vinyl and brilliant MONO audio - a worthy addition to any serious jazz vinyl collection.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl thick cardboard "crucifix" style mailer along with at least two thick cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
