TUTANKHAMUN’S TRUMPETS PLAYED! HISTORIC 1939 BBC BROADCAST TRANSCRIPTION 78!
ON OFFER IS A LITERALLY HISTORIC RECORDING!
The discovery and excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 by Howard Carter revealed two war trumpets, one silver and one copper. They were played for the first time in over 3000 years on the 16th April 1939, when bandsman James Tappern of the 11th Prince Albert’s Own Royal Hussars regiment played them live over the BBC from Cairo to a worldwide audience.
The segment of the broadcast featuring the the trumpets being played with introductory comments was recorded by the BBC, and we’re proud to be able to offer an almost unique opportunity to acquire a copy of this historically-important commercially unissued 78rpm disc. The writing on the label seems to suggest that it belonged to a member of the family but Tappern’s son, himself a noted trumpeter, confirmed that his father’s copy was broken many years ago.
ISSUE: BBC 3486, 1-sided disc
