Pioneers of the lo-fi aesthetic and towering figures of the New Zealand pop music scene, the Tall Dwarfs were formed in 1979 by singers/songwriters Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate following the demise of their previous band, the legendary Toy Love .Tall Dwarf's releases were deliberately primitive, the D.I.Y. ethic at its purest -- songs were all recorded at home (performed in bedrooms, hallways, and the like) and defiantly experimental in nature, presaging the rise of what was ultimately dubbed "lo-fi" as the sound began to grow in prominence and influence over the course of the decades to follow.
In 1982, Alec Bathgate relocated from Dunedin to Christchurch; with the distance between him and Chris Knox now totalling some 750 kilometers, Tall Dwarfs was relegated to a side project, with both men meeting once or twice annually to record and perform the occasional live date. The first product of their long-distance union was the EP Luis likes his daily dip issued in 1982 on the fledgling Flying Nun label; canned music followed a year later.....
It's true, to a certain degree, that there isn't a great deal of variation in Tall Dwarfs approach from record to record. It's also true, to a greater degree, that you can always count on a great deal of variation within any given record itself. That's the case with this hybrid LP-EP, which showed the group capable of expanding their template from their earliest releases. Side one, which plays at 45 rpm, has two related pieces, "Nothings Going to Happen" and "Nothings Going to Stop It," which sound sort of like a garage Sgt.Pepper with their lo-fi wall of orchestral psychedelia. It's back to 33 rpm for the ten songs on side two, a salad bar with samplings of pretty acoustic guitar, a bit of surf influence, some blasts of garage organ, nods to both Lennon and McCartney ("Woman" sounds like primal scream-era Lennon backed by a sloppy San Francisco psychedelic act), and more.
This very rare 12 Songs Mini LP released by Flying Nun New Zealand (FNlong 1) in 1987 vinyl looks very good, typical thin cover has 1cm split at bottom, 5cm split on top, beginning slight ringwear, cover vg-, vinyl mint-, comes with insert vinyl plays 33 AND 45
