Description
This lot contains ten 10-inch 78 RPM records featuring Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra on at least one side.
Unless noted otherwise below, the label credits are in the name of Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, so please pay attention to the variations. All are also instrumental except where a vocalist is mentioned.
Only one side - "Wang-Wang Blues" - is considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's iconic Hot Jazz Discography, which gives it a recording date of August 9, 1920, with the composer, Henry Busse, in the line-up of the band. The other Victor sides are all listed in Rust's "American Dance Band Discography", but not the Decca sides, which might have missed the book's cutoff date of 1942. Additionally, the Sudhalter-Evans book "Bix, Man and Legend", lists Bix Beiderbecke as playing cornet on both sides of Victor # 21304.
All ten records showed up for the first picture, then they are shown in pairs, both sides, in the following order:
Victor # 18690 - "Whispering" and "The Japanese Sandman", both by Paul Whiteman and his Ambassador Orchestra.
Victor # 18694 - "Anytime, Anyday, Anywhere" and "Wang-Wang Blues", both by Paul Whiteman and his Ambassador Orchestra.
Victor # 18801 - "South Sea Isles"; and "Rosy Cheeks", the latter by the All Star Trio and their Orchestra.
Victor # 18803 - "Sweet Lady" and "Say It with Music."
Victor # 18899 - "Stumbling" and "Georgia."
Victor # 18962 - "Carolina in the Morning"; and "Cow Bells", the latter by Zez Confrey and his Orchestra.
Victor # 18963 - "Homesick"; and "All Over Nothing at All", the latter by the Great White Way Orchestra.
Victor # 20973 - "Missouri Waltz" (with "vocal chorus") and "Beautiful Ohio" (with "vocal refrain"). Brian Rust lists the vocalist on "Beautiful Ohio" as Jack Fulton, and the chorus on "Missouri Waltz" as Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, Charles Gaylord, Jack Fulton and Austin Young.
Victor # 21304 - "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and "Oh, Ya Ya."
Decca # 2578 -- "Moon Love" and "To You" (vocal on both sides by Joan Edwards).
All ten play through without skipping or repeating on my Audio-Technica turntable, but with varying degrees of background noise, mostly very minimal, but interspersed with pops and clicks and some passages of ticking or swishing. If I had to rate them, I'd say the last two are the most heavily worn, but some of the others are strongly in the VG+ to EX range. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment. Please also check the pictures for any label damage or inscriptions or stickers.
Also included are the Victor and Decca sleeves shown in the pictures, which are chipped and creased and torn and add nothing to the overall value.
