While In C and RainBow In Curved Air often steal the spotlight, Terry Riley’s 1980 album Shri Camel deserves equal recognition. As the last of his three groundbreaking CBS releases, it’s a testament to Riley’s restless innovation.
In the ‘70s, Riley studied Hindustani classical music with Pandit Pran Nath, blending this Eastern influence with his own experiments in just intonation—a tuning system based on pure mathematical intervals instead of the tempered scales of Western music. The result is a mesmerizing soundscape performed on a specially modified Yamaha organ. Its shimmering tones shift like rippling water, responding to the listener’s focus and breath.
More complex and rewarding than typical “New Age” music, Shri Camel creates ecstatic, hypnotic rhythms and harmonies that feel like a massage for the brain, leaving you refreshed, relaxed, and maybe even a bit sharper.
