Since his impressive debut on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" (1992) Snoop (Doggy) Dogg was one of the most famous and important west coast rappers during the whole G-Funk period and even afterwards. His first solo album "Doggystyle" (1993) went platinum and made Snoop Dogg a successfull solo star. Now, after Snoop's finally left Death Row his new CD "Tha Last Meal" is available.
And it's not a bad one. Tracks like "Snoop Dogg", "Wrong Idea" and "Lay Low" are entertaing and good-sounding west coast raps, though not doing much more than emphazising that Snoop's a real O.G. But to be a really great album "Tha Last Meal" just contains too many songs you forget a minute after you've heard them plus some bad guests. Some of the featured parts (Nate Dogg, Tha Eastsidaz, Ice Cube) are ok but some others are rather annoying. And appart from that there are several people you miss - Dr. Dre, Xzibit or RBX don't have one line to rap. Dre appears for about 10 seconds in the beginning of "Lay Low" where he takes it to the point.
But it'd be easier to deal with a Snoop Dogg album without those rappers if there wasn't such a lot of stuff spoiled by Kokane. His sometimes funny, but usually just horrible voice would be ok in two, maybe three songs but he's featured in excactly 7 tracks of whom only "Henessy 'n Buddah" and "Wrong Idea" aren't victims of his parts.
Apart from that though, Snoop Dogg's, (aka Calvin Broadus) new album sounds quite cool. The former drug dealer from Long Beach proofs to be one of the best MC's according to how he's rapping his texts.
