Description
This 6LP box set includes many of the classic Allman Brothers songs from their original albums plus a lot of songs recorded by the individual band members and the groups they were in before forming the Allman Brothers Band and after the band split up. There is also an excellent 32-page booklet printed on heavy textured paper that tells the story of the band illustrated with photographs and includes recording details (personnel, dates etc) for all the songs in the box set.

I've owned this box set from new (bought in the early nineties) and although I have played all records in the past, none have been played in the last 12 years or so. They have been stored from new in Nagaoka No. 102 anti-static sleeves (the original yellow paper sleeves are still in the box) and handled with care. The box itself is in good condition apart from the fact that one corner of the lid split in the past and was repaired with Scotch tape. The box is made of rather thin card and is weak at the corners so I also taped up the other three corners of the lid to prevent them from splitting as well. The photograph of record one is representative of the appearance of all the records. The booklet is in excellent condition.
Here are individual grades for the records using the Record Collector grading scheme (reproduced below):
- Record 1 - EX
- Record 2 - EX
- Record 3 - VG
Faint scratch about 1cm long over the second half of track 1 and the first half of track 2, side 1. I have play-tested this part of the record and I don't here a 'click' that repeats the whole length of this mark, just an occasional 'tick', which I didn't find bothersome. - Record 4 - EX
- Record 5 - EX-
What looks like a fingerprint on track 5, side 2. - Record 6 - VG
Faint line-shaped mark about 8mm long on the second half of track 6 and the first half of track 7, side 1. Two line-shaped marks about 3mm long and 0.5mm across, one during track 2 and one during track 3, side 1. Not sure whether these are scratches or some kind of contamination. I have play-tested this section and although there was some occasional surface noise, I didn't find it particularly disturbing.
Please note that all grades are visual only unless stated otherwise.
Record Collector grading scheme:
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
