ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fascinating and very rare 3LP set from Melodiya (33M 10-41237-42, Soviet pressing, pink/black label, mono, full-page insert included) entitled “The Art of Miron Polyakin” (sometimes spelled Myron), features a homage to one the truly great Russian violinists of the last century, a pupil of Leopod Auer, and an artist whose recorded legacy still remains too little-known outside his native land.
At ArkivMusic one can find this brief biographical sketch of Polyakin: “Miron Polyakin was born in 1895 and began his education at the music school in Kiev. In 1908, he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a pupil of Auer. For one of his examinations, the highest possible mark was a 5 but Glazunov insisted on giving him a 5++ and in 1910 Auer's report on Polyakin consisted of three exclamation marks. However, his pride and arrogance were also noted. In taste and style Polyakin's playing was held to be the closest to Auer of any of his pupils, but affliction from nerves made him an uneven player. In later years, as a teacher at the Leningrad Conservatory, he tended to proceed by example rather than explanation. Indeed, at times, his playing in class was felt to exceed anything he achieved in concert. The brevity of his life, he died in 1941, and the conditions prevailing in Russia in the `30s, have left us with a recorded legacy of this artist which is both very small and very hard to come by.”
A note on this particular issue: Melodiya compiled these recordings on 3 separate LPs, each housed in its own plain jacket, the 3 discs then packages in a sort of softcover gatefold slipcase – it is not a box, though it nearly appears like one. Included is a single-sided full-page insert with an apprecation of Polyakin’s artistry and full title/track listings – all text in Russian only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold slipcover case is VERY GOOD. There is bumping/wear at corners, as well as mild discoloration. The slip case does not close tightly, but is unbroken and there are no seamsplits, tears, or other flaws – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the single-side full-page insert VERY GOOD. There is a slight bend/crease to the upper-right corner, but that is all. The page remains bright and crisp and free of any owners’ markings.
The condition of the 3 LPs is VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT throughout. Though the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is excellent, keeping in mind that these are all transfers from 78 rpm recordings. Thus, if you must have flawless or near-MINT surfaces, then please do not buy this set. Overall, these LPs rate as very good collector's copies.
