RUBBER SOUL
Original First UK Mono Pressing with "Loud Cut" matrix
PARLOPHONE PMC 1267 : MATRIX NOs XEX 579-1/XEX 580-1
The vinyl shows a lot of visual surface wear. There are many sleeve removal marks, hairlines, some scratches too. The labels show a fair amount of spindle trails and it's clear that this LP was played and quite enjoyed by it's previous owner. Luckily a lot of the wear is superficial as the record plays through nicely without ever skipping. It just has some surface noise and crackle in places, especially between tracks and in quiet passages. Surprisingly there's no inner groove wear and the sound quality is quite nice throughout. The "Loud Cut" EQ choices can be quite harsh in some songs but on good equipment it tracks pretty well and it sounds good throughout. Some tracks play very well, others will have more crackle / ticks / pops and there are also some rotational ticks in places. The record definitely plays better than it looks and I feel like Very Good - is a good, conservative overall grading for this. Please don't expect miracles from this LP, it's certainly not mint by any means but it's performance is surprising given how it looks! If you sum your cartridge to mono, the sound only gets better and I'd argue that the record can punch up into a solid VG grade when played like this - I heavily recommend doing this if you can.
The original rarer Ernest J. Day flipback cover, in contrast, is in a really good condition! It looks great and it's clear that this cover was stored in proper conditions and that care was taken with it. The front laminate is nice and shiny, looking great with only a few small spots of wear and a few thumbnail marks on it near the opening. The corners have some very slight bumping but overall they're quite nice. The back panel is nice and clean with clean, white flipbacks and only some slight signs of dirt / staining near the openings and the flipbacks. The spine is nice, white and clear and the openings have little wear to them too. I'd personally grade this as Very Good + and it could serve as a nice cover upgrade for anyone who already has a mono Rubber Soul LP
The inner sleeve is a generic 1960s poly-lined inner, which is in great shape.
This copy is not for the discriminating audiophile, but beyond the demerits it still does sound decent enough!
