Description
The Beatles - "Rubber Soul" / Capitol, T 2442, Mono, U.S., 1965
An Ex/VG+ U.S. mono pressing of "Rubber Soul". The thickets of The Beatles' discography are perplexing even for one, such as I, fascinated by minutiae. As such, I've not claimed this copy as a first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. U.S. pressing. Rather, I'll lay out all the relevant points from outward in (grading/condition will receive a separate treatment, below) for those better versed in these matters. Here goes. The sleeve is still encased in the original shrink with the black on yellow "Hear Paul Sing / 'Michelle' / Original Beatles' Version" sticker (which is apparently quite scarce). Additionally, it sports a Sam Goody price-sticker at the rear (though the price is no longer legible) and the ghost of a price-sticker to the front left. The factory number (lower right of the rear opposite the RIAA device) is "2" (the image provided suggests a "1", but it is indeed "2"). Any points of note that I've not detailed here should be answered in the photographs. An original Capitol picture sleeve sits within. The labels are the original Rainbow variety. The head credit leaves "and Ringo Starr" a line below the rest. The text rimming the lower edge refers to "Capitol Records" and not to "...a subsidary of...". The label matrix numbers read: T-2442 (T-X-1-2442) and T-2442 (T-X-2-2442). The runoff/deadwax stampers read: T1-2442-F3#2 and T2-2442 G6. Both are followed by a triangular device with IAM inscribed within (unless my eyes deceive me).
And so to condition, again from the exterior in. The shrinkwrap has been opened, naturally, so slit at the open edge. Additionally, tears with loss at the lower right and upper left (viewing from the back); small loss at the former, larger at the latter. The sleeve itself is very sound and presentable: clean and bright sides with the following diminutions - slightly sunned/discolored at the open edge (mostly visible at the back), hint of ring shadow at both sides. The edges are quite sound, the label edge very legible and presentable. The corners are generally quite presentable with a minute nick to the top corner at the open edge, a slightly larger spot of rubbing/chaffing to the its counterpart at the bottom. Finally, there is a penmark to the lower right of the rear next to the RIAA device, presumably a shop mark. The Capitol inner sleeve is clean and presentable, lightly handled, with a touch of crinkle to the lower edge suggestive of liquid contact at some point. The labels are very clean and bright - no swindle swipe, no discoloration, no gashing or damage to the spindle hole itself. The sides are clean, bright, quite glossy. A very close look revealed a few very light needle spots, one hairline and some very light paper scuff to side 1 and some very light needle marks to side 2. The sides were playgraded for this auction and found to play very clean indeed, with just a touch of pressing static at spots. I've provided links to sound files. These are unedited. Rather than dot about selecting spots, I've taken the first 25-30 seconds of every track (expect 1-3 seconds of interstitial quiet at the beginning of each). They are linked in the LP's natural order.
