Description
While the Winterland concert and the Martin Scorsese film are historical rock events, the film generally considered the finest concert film ever made, the event itself still is controversial. Robbie Robertson had had enough life on the road and decided to end the Band's run, the other members were not on the same page. Regardless, they went along with it. On Thanksgiving Night, 1976, with a little help from their friends, brought it all to a close. Mixed among what was essentially a Greatest Hits concert were masterful performances by rock legends who had crossed paths with the Band over their incomparable history. Neil Young, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, Emmylou Harris and of course Bob Dylan all perform. Joni Mitchell's "Coyote" is superb, with Rick Danko playing a bass line that drives the song. Eric Clapton does a great "Further on Up The Road", trading off the lead with Robbie Robertson. The Staple Singers version of "The Weight" soaks it in the Gospel feel the song has always had. Whatever the feelings that drove the decision leading to the event, everyone put their soul into the music. It's a must have.
