The album was assembled as a simplified, stripped-down replacement for the band's highly anticipated and experimental project, Smile, which was abandoned after significant delays.

Recording sessions took place largely at Brian Wilson's home studio, using unconventional equipment, contributing to its distinct lo-fi sound.

It includes the hit single "Good Vibrations", which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Heroes and Villains".

While initially met with indifference and considered a commercial disappointment in the US, Smiley Smile has since become a cult classic and an influential album in the lo-fi and ambient genres.
