LP Condition Grading Guide 
Record, Sleeve and Album jacket are all individually graded. If item falls between grades it will be stated as so.
New  
Brand new/sealed


Like New or Near Mint (LN or NM)
A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly)that no record is ever truly perfect.  The record should show no obvious signs of wear. Shiny surface free of visible defects, no surface noise. Labels pressed properly, free of writing, other markings and blemishes. LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as record sleeves, posters and the like. Basically, an LP in like new/near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a record store and removed the shrink wrap.


Very Good Plus (VG+)
A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.  Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have some very light scuffs or very light surface/hairline scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. May have slight surface noise or light tick here or there but not constant or overpowering. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are acceptable. The label may have some slight wear or discoloration but free of writing or major blemishes.  The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. LP inner sleeves may have some slight wear, scuff, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear, light scuffs, minor seam wear or small seam split less than an inch long. May be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount. If not for some of these conditions the record could be close to like new or near mint condition.


Very Good (VG)
A very good record shows more obvious signs of wear and handling then a VG+ record. Surface noise will be evident upon playing of a very good record, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade but will not overpower the music otherwise. Light groove wear and scuffs will be evident on site, as with light surface/hairline scratches that may be audible (slight ticks) here or there but not constant and will not overpower the music. Labels, album sleeves and covers may have minor writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. Covers may have or expect light to medium ring wear but not overwhelming. Small to medium seam splits (up to three sides) but should not be overwhelming. Covers may be dull, stains, bent/dinged corners, minor scuffs/shelf wear on front, back edges and spine. Cut out notch/hole. Inner sleeves may have same conditions as described for album covers including minor creases.  A very good record will have some of these conditions but not too overwhelming, any more than that we get into VG- and below. Overall a well played record but still an enjoyable listen.

Very Good Minus (VG-)       
Shows more obvious and pronounced signs of wear and handling then a VG record. Surface noise will be more evident upon playing of VG- record, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade that may slightly overpower the music here or there but not constant. Groove wear and scuffs will be more evident on site, as with light to medium surface/hairline scratches that may be audible (slight ticks) that may slightly overpower the music here or there but not constant. Labels, album sleeves and covers may have more/larger writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. Covers may have or expect medium to heavy ring wear but not too overwhelming. Medium to large seam splits (up to three sides). Covers may be dull, stains, bent/dinged corners, scuffs/shelf wear on front, back edges and spine. Cut out notch/hole. Inner sleeves may have same conditions as described for album covers including creases.  A VG-  will have some of these conditions but not too overwhelming, any more than that we get into Good and below grades. Overall a little more wear then a VG record but still a decent listen.
                                                        
Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. It is a common item, you'll probably find another copy in better shape eventually. Pass it up. But, if it's something you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it...but keep looking to upgrade.
