Rare "Title Discrepancy" Error | Scranton Pressing | In Shrink Wrap
This is a premier collector’s copy of the 1970 Beatles compilation. It features the famous "The Beatles Again" label error, paired with a jacket still preserved in shrink wrap. This is a "transition" pressing from the Capitol Scranton plant, documented by the technical identifiers in the dead wax.
The "Misprint" & Variations:
Title Error: The record labels bear the original intended title, The Beatles Again, while the jacket spine and back identify the album as Hey Jude.
Catalog Number Discrepancy: The labels show catalog number SO-385 (reflecting the original $6.98 price point), while the jacket spine shows SW-385 (the $5.98 price change), a classic hallmark of the earliest US runs.
Technical Specifications & Dead Wax:
Pressing Plant: Scranton, PA (Identified by the IAM in a triangle stamped in the dead wax).
Mastering: Stamped "Bell Sound" and etched "sf", indicating it was mastered by the legendary Sam Feldman at Bell Sound Studios.
Matrix Numbers: * Side 1: SO-1-385-Z8 #2 (Bell Sound, IAM Triangle, sf)
Side 2: SO-2-385-Z10 (Bell Sound, IAM Triangle, sf).
Condition Report:
Jacket (VG/VG+): Still in the shrink wrap. The shrink has kept the front and back cover art vibrant and clean. There is a small name ("S. Katz") neatly written on the back white border. I don't think its the original wrap because of this. No seam splits or heavy ring wear.
Vinyl (VG): Glossy with some light surface marks and paper scuffs that do not affect playability. A very solid, presentable copy of a 50+ year old record.
Labels (EX): Beautiful Apple labels with the "Beatles Again" text crisp and clear. Minimal spindle marks.
Why Add This to Your Collection?
Transition copies like this—where the marketing changed faster than the pressing plant could react—are the backbone of a serious Beatles collection. Finding one with the Scranton "IAM" stamp and Bell Sound mastering, especially one still in the original shrink, is getting harder every year.
Shipping: Ships in a heavy-duty cardboard record mailer. The vinyl will be removed from the jacket and placed in a generic sleeve during transit to prevent seam splits to the original cover.
Note to Buyers: Please see all high-resolution photos for the exact matrix stamps and label details.
