Description
For sale we have a lovely example of The Beatles' Beatles for Sale LP from 1964. This is an original mono copy on the Parlophone label, catalogue number PMC 1240.
This is a first pressing.
The matrix numbers of this LP are XEX 503-4N (side one) and XEX 504-4N (side two), meaning that this is from the back end of the run of the first pressing, also evidenced by the "KT" tax code stamp in the centre of the label. This album is therefore over 50 years old. The sleeve I would grade as VG. There is some edge and corner wear and the spine is worn, although not split through. The original "EMITEX" inner sleeve is undamaged (no splits or tears), though there is a light brown mark on one side (perhaps someone left their coffee cup on it?). The mark isn't too bad (you can see it in the attached photograph). The LP I would conservatively grade as VG. The album plays throughout with no skips. There is what looks like a scratch on side one, however this is mostly cosmetic and can only be heard as a light "tick" on silent grooves. Likewise, there is a small hairline scratch on side 2, though this also does not affect playback. Some light surface noise is audible between tracks, but is almost inaudible during the songs. The audio throughout is loud, clear and punchy. This is an outstanding copy of an outstanding LP.
A note on optimal playback equipment. Please read carefully.
This is a mono LP, issued in the 1960s, and designed to be played on mono equipment with a conical stylus. It can, however, be played back on modern stereo equipment. For the best performance, it is advisable to use a conical stylus, rather than a more modern elliptical or fine-line stylus. The record can be played back with a modern stylus, but may exhibit more distortion and surface noise. It is also advisable to engage the mono switch, if you amplifier has one, or if not, to connect the turntable with a "double Y-cable" to sum the channels and cut the noise floor. Ironically, this record plays back better on my cheap Sony turntable than it does on my fancy Rega with its AT440MLa cartridge. Please bear this in mind if you're thinking of making a bid for this item.
